You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I've to create a portfolio for college, and I've decided to do a web one 'cos I'm poor and I already have a website. What do folks think? Any suggestions? I'm sure there will be!
http://cleanslateimages.co.uk/
(I already know the "Close" button on the lightbox thingy is missing, I'll fix that tonight)
The pictures are too small 🙂
Hmm... it's good.
Make the word 'images' the same colour as the rest.
That thumbnail of the laughing woman makes her look a bit like a braying horse, not the ideal pic to put in there I think. Pics of people laughing hard are very difficult to pull off, so I'd give it a miss if I were you.
Also the text is a bit ****y. What's it for? You've got pics up there, they should speak for themselves.. he's a photographer, that's the whole point. The bit about being in the right place at the right time - that's bloomin obvious.
From a techie point of view, lose the animation that make the zoomed in image grow. Takes too long. A quick fade would be better.
The main images? Yeah I made it on my laptop so I sized them to fit that, I can certainly embiggen them.
**edit** Yeah, the text is super****y, but it fits with the guff I have to cover to get good grades, if that makes sense?
some of the images are a little dark on my (profiled) monitor. perhaps look to make them a little more consistent?
If this is a portfolio are you asking about the image as well as the site?
Right, I'll check the brightness of the images, I do tend to get a bit carried away making things all dark and moody.
Not sure I can get rid of the animation using the same script, 'cos frankly I'm not that clever. I shall have a poke around in it. And yeah, I may well change laughing lady!
**edit** (I'm too slow!) yeah, comments on the images welcome too, I struggled to choose them...
Well.. I like many of the images. However urban decay is a bit of a cliche, so be careful. The warped floorboards is ace tho cos of the shape and form. The disused chapel is amazing subject matter, I'd have done a lot of work in there.. check out the faded murals and the dust on the pews.. the image you have is a bit meh though and it's NOT STRAIGHT! No excuse for that 🙂 Likewise the boarded up street. There's the opportunity for loads of pathos there, much more than an old factory, but the pic is a bit sweeping. I guess it's an empty street, no cars and all, but it needs something to focus on tho I reckon rather than focusing on the nothing.
It's a bit heavy on the urban decay stuff though, looks like half of it.
The biking ones are nothing special if you don't mind me saying so - ok and competent enough but it's really hard to do good biking images imo. 99.9% of the ones I see are just a bloke/woman on a bike. The hill in the one detracts from the rider a bit too which seems odd to the eye, plus it's bang in the middle of the shot.
Image 19 is outstanding though - interesting and fairly technically creative. Top drawer stuff that. For marketing purposes you could replace all the images with just that one 🙂
Looks like there's a problem with the lightbox script; it only darkens out the left hand half of my screen when it pops up the image. (Personally I've never liked lightbox anyway, 's always struck me as form over function)
Is it just me that keeps reading Pornography Website Opinions?
😕
As above ^
It only darkens left hand of my screen too.
I would suggest a contact form rather than putting a link to your email address...unless you do have erectile disfunction and want receive offers of medication to help with your affliction.
I'm sure this copy could flow a little better. . . and give a little more insight?
All of the images on this page are available to purchase as prints, and Will is available to document events. He is also available for commissions. To find out more, simply email Will.
Maybe...

or something like that?
What developing software to you use?
and it's NOT STRAIGHT!
That's a recurring issue for me. Verticals (and related lines, obviously), or the average of vertical/horizontal line, are a bit sloppy. They don't always need to be perfect, but they do, in my opinion, need to be sympathetic to one another, and to the overall framing. I was constantly tilting my head and adjusting my peripheral vision. Hurts my tiny brain after a while.
Do you crop images without adjusting lens profiles?
It's an issue for me when I take pictures - I am learning to concentrate on it. At a pinch, I can use live view and have the camera show guide lines.
However it's a non issue really cos I can just rotate it in PS afterwards, which is what the op needs to do 🙂
One thing that has always annoyed me about these lightbox jobbies - why show a tiny little bit of the photograph in the thumbnail then get an entirely different crop for the main image?
It is not usable (it can leave user confused when the image popping up doesn't match the thumbnail they originally clicked).
#usabilityfail
I agree actually MF, it did annoy me that the thumbnail was a random patch of the image. I've no idea if I'm going to like the whole image or not so the thumbnail is useless, might as well put 'picture #1' on there instead.

Bugger. Any better suggestions? It might have to "do" for now due to time constraints.

Lightroom.

*considers wrists slapped* I shall get back on the straighten tool...
Do you crop images without adjusting lens profiles?
Er... Yes. Shouldn't I?
Looks like everyone hates Lightbox... I shall have to search for an alternative. Would you prefer a square crop of the whole image (assuming I want to keep it square)?
Maybe just shrink them and just crop them a tiny bit so they tessellate.
Just me it is then. 😉
Apparently PP 🙂
Sorry Mr Poddy, I missed that! Sadly no... Nothing that exciting 😉
The "home" link image, (bottom right on each pic) shows as a dead link on my system
Er... Yes. Shouldn't I?
It depends; but at least you should be aware of it. A lens will distort an image evenly around all sides - if you crop, say, the bottom left quarter out of an image, the lens' distortion will be different in the bottom left quarter of the crop than it will on the top right of the crop (which used to be the centre of the original image). Do you see? So the cropping leaves you with an asymmetrical distortion that makes the image harder on the eye.
Even if an image isn't being cropped, it's worth it to take a look at an image with the distortion corrected (Lightroom is really very good at this). When your image is relying on distinct lines and shapes to create an effect (like your stairwell image) it can easily be weakened by lens distortion. This is amplified in the overall image if the distortion is asymmetrical, as mentioned earlier.
DezB - Yup, I knew that one. Thanks 🙂
Three Fish - Interesting! I knew about lens distortion, but the wonkening it causes when cropping never really occurred to me. I shall definitely be playing with the lens correction tools in Lightroom forthwith.
Lightroom has an excellent set of lens profiles. The manual option is good, but you can select your exact lens from the drop-down menus and an image is straightened out in an instant. I think you can then add an even distortion to the cropped image*.
I'll edit this. Now that I think about it, maybe you can't (I'm not at my computer to check). You might have to export/reimport the image to apply lens distortion. You could experiment and find out! I'm curious to know... 🙂
I still keep looking just in case I'm right.... 🙂
Agree with most of the above.
Also. on my screen the bottom row of thumbnails in not aligned with those above it...?
Love the urban decay stuff - as Molgrips also said, it would be a while before I got bored shooting in there - be it detail stuff or getting models and some off camera flash going on 🙂
DezB - Yup, I knew that one. Thanks
I will have to learn to read a full posting 😳
It's the thought that counts 😀
With the exception of second from right on bottom row, do you specialise in ugly folk?

.
If so, I could do with a portrait doing 😳
I like to think of it as people with character 😉
DxO Optics Pro does lens distortion for a huge range of lenses, and is cheaper than Lightroom apparently.
