I'm thinking about getting a new camera, because N+1 applies to cameras too and mine are getting a bit long in the tooth. I currently have a Nikon D90 plus lenses (I used to have a D700 when shooting more pro, but cut down a few years ago) and a Canon S95 for adventuring. Neither are any cop at video.

I'm looking at second hand mirrorless systems as something that will probably be a similar quality to the D90 (or better, I guess, it's getting on a bit) but still pretty portable and give me a decent choice of lenses.

Something like a Panasonic GX7 looks pretty decent, and I've seen good bodies go for £200 which would leave me a chunk of cash to get some lenses (probably something like a wide prime, a portraity prime and a longer zoom).

How do focal lengths compare - ie what would be the equivalent of a 50mm prime on full frame? Are they any good for shooting video? I have adventures planned this year that I'd like to video.

Panasonic and Olympus mirrorless cameras are Micro 4/3, which means a crop factor of 2. So a 25mm lens is equivalent to 50mm on full frame.

I think most of the Panasonics are rather good for video. The GX7 has in-body image stabilisation, but it seems that doesn't work for video. Most of the Panasonic lenses have stabilisation, which should help a bit anyway.

Ah that's useful to know about the crop factor, cheers.

Yeah they all seem to get good write ups for video. I'm not *too* fussed about stabilisation for video I guess, not something I've given a lot of thought to. Will probably be mostly tripod mounted anyway.

Song A6000 may well be worth a look. Bigger sensor than the 4/3rds variants. 1.5 crop factor on an Aps sized sensor. Currys and that do them ( might be a 6300 now) but it'll feel very very similar. Quick little things too.

That footage looks pretty damn good - as does the Sony as another option. Just about in budget second hand too, and the bigger sensor would definitely be a bonus.

I have the sony a6000 + 16-55 and 55-210 kit lenses (i didnt go for the new version as im not a massive video user) Its a cracking little camera for the days when I dont want to carry my big camera canon 7d+ lenses or when I need more than my canon g12. Yes the quality isnt quite upto 'the posh'lenses but its definatly good quality and easy enough to drive (you can get better lenses) several of the chaps at the camera club have gone over to mirrorless systems crop & full frame, I cant fault mine, the only improvement I went with was to put a wrist strap on it, I removed the eye piece rubber so i could fit it into my pocket better (it fits it to a very small bag with the other lens too) I got a spare battery just incase as its one of those constant dranage type ones but have never needed to swap over during shooting (aprox 250 shots one day) 😀

Big fan of Panasonic m4/3 system especially for video.

We've got a pair of GH4s shooting 4K , and some of the results are close enough to our big bucks cameras. I particularly like working with the 20mm pancake lens. I can shoot whole films on that to a point 🙂

Reckon a GH4 is a bit out of budget (though they do look awesome) and I can live without the 4k, but that's good to hear!

The GH3 is still a great camera. I use mine all the time and all the photos I took for the website are with that. Also I've sold quite a few photos with that for mags and advertising. Video is great too, not 4K but really watchable. They must be pretty cheap 2nd hand now.

One advantage of u4/3 compared to the sony, the smaller sensor keeps the lenses a fair bit smaller.

+1 for pretty much anything panasonic.

Though having said that, have some work olympus kit and they're good too. As a human I prefer the handling of the panasonics tho (but the olympus lets you get a nice sensor in a smaller package which is nice for robot/drone mounting, and it's barely used by a human directly so handling doesn't matter).

I'm not so interested in video, but I own an Oly u43 kit, and read reviews of Pana stuff from time to time and they seem unanimous that it is good for video. It is what the Luminous Landscape folk use to shoot their videos, I believe.

Handling is important, but I guess that's quite subjective!

I've got an A6000, upgraded from a D90. Picture quality and spec wise it's vastly superior as well as being much much smaller. I have used it for video and the video quality is superb but functionality from a video perspective isn't great. If you're considering one feel free to ask any questions and I'll try and answer them for you.

Cheers JimJam, that's much appreciated.

I'm still figuring out exactly what I need / what the best options are, really. Interesting to hear that the A6000 is much better than the D90 imagewise, I thought that might be the case with the D90 being a bit long in the tooth but it's good to hear it from the horse's mouth, as it were.

When you say the functionality with video isn't great what is it that's the problem? Specific to the Sony or to mirrorless cameras?

My main problem is probably the location and style of the video button. It's a small button on the flank of the body that requires a poke, rather that a press. I could probably reasign another button but then things might get confusing.

I find I have to adjust my grip/hand poistion ever so slightly to get video on, and particularly off. Also, whilst the codec is pretty good and seems to work well with Premier and After Effects you have to import videos as a folder, the contents of which are invisible (at least to me, on my OS) so you end up with duplicates if you don't curate them carefully.

Minor gripes really for something that can create pretty beautiful videos.

Cheers, that's dead helpful. I'm swaying towards the Panasonic at the moment but I'll definitely have a read up on the Sony system. Wide angle lenses seem to be a bit of a sticking point at the moment.

Panasonic GX8 with a 14-140 and 7-14 zooms here.

Can't fault it. Nice to handle and takes some fantastic photos on the iAutomtic setting.

If you price up the 3 lenses you want then the A6000 will loose its appeal. Microfourthirds has a way better lens choice and many at good prices. There simply isn't a good value/quality long zoom in the Sony range

Ah that's a shame. The M43 range seems to have everything I need at pretty decent prices, especially second hand.

Looks like a 12-32 or 12-60 if I can stretch to it plus a 45-150 and probably a 20mm 1.8 would cover everything I need quite nicely, and in a reasonable budget too.

I have a Canon EOS M3 - no complaints it has been a cracking camera so far, got some amazing shots on holiday.

However. Older manual lenses* are preferable for video and these are cheap and abundant. I picked up two E-mount lenses (one brand new and one nearly new) from a local seller on Gumtree for less than £200. Sony 50m1.8 and Sigma 19m to add to my old Nikon lenses. I eventually sold the Sigma, nice lense but I prefered using my old Nikon manual lenses. I keep the 50 around for portraits as it's fantastic.

Obviously there is a crop factor but try to allow for that when buying.

I guess it'll be easier to get wide shots with an old manual lens on the Sony too, with the bigger sensor (I'm planning on making some videos of bike adventures, and being as we're a bunch of talentless gompers wide shots showing scenery are generally preferred!).

Well I'd just about settled on a second hand Panasonic GX7 when I spotted a cash back offer on the newer and slightly better specced (better stabilisation and 4k video) GX80 which, with a 12-32 kit lens comes in at £350 - so I've ordered one of those.

Hopefully photos and video to follow soon...

The Oly OM-10D would get my vote. Lucent little thing. Very usable and with the while m4/3 lens line up at your disposal.

Good choice of camera, love the m43 system. Get the compact 20mm 1.7 and you'll have a fantastic pocket (jacket) friendly system.

Great choice of lenses all round as well and plenty of adapters for manual lenses.

Yup the 20mm is next on the list I think. Might trade the zoom for a 14mm prime but I'll see what I think of it yet. I have some old manual lenses, might get an adapter for my old M42 Zenit.

We were in Currys this afternoon and I'm fairly sure that they had the G7 14-42 kits for £250. Still £500 on their website though so I may have remembered wrongly.
