I was approached by someone making a book on rustic cabins.
I sent them some pictures purely for reference in anticipation of them sending their own photographer.
Turns out the picture editor likes my pictures sufficiently to include them as they stand. However they are sending their photographer to work on another cabin.
They've asked me what I'd like to be paid for the rights to use my pictures. I've no idea what sums are involved. Their previous publications have appeared in some s****y magazines so I while I'm flattered enough to allow them to have them use them for nothing, I don't want short change myself.
So, what would be a reasonable sum for their use?
Used to buy pictures for books for a few different publishers. It could get complicated - i.e. how many countries, what print run, how many future editions, what size, will there be online versions etc... or it could be very simple - '£100 up to half page, £250 full page, use it as much as you want, and send me a couple of copies'. Or thereabouts. You may be able to log onto a stock library and get an idea of what the going rate is... Any picture researcher/editor should be able to have an honest discussion with you about this, they will have a budget, possibly per page if they are working to templates. Well done!
I let people use mine for free in books.
I got paid £75 for a half page pic in the CTC magazine, single use
Depends on the book, Tricky questions to ask is, how big the print run will be? Will the book be using the images in colour or black and white glossy or newsprint. Don't forget the cost to them of getting a photographer to visit the shed might be either loads (glossy magazine) or bugger all (cheap paper book)
If the book is a cheap production they might just drop the pictures and use others.
Wasn't long ago that Agencies were offering nothing for using people's images from Flickr all around the world.
Start at £150 for an image published in just this book and go up. But as I said depends on the publication.
On the few occasions I've sold shots for anything, I've tended to look at the London Freelance website for guidance. Can be a bit heavy going, but full of useful stuff.

Thanks for your help on this. I'll get some more detail from the picture editor and ask what she feels is a fair fee. The reward for me was actually in the design and building of the shed, anything else is really a bonus.
Very little, in my experience. I've been paid £25 for a photo in a popular magazine. Been published in a couple of books and the most I got was a copy of the book. Unless it's a charity though, do ask for something in return. As flattering as it is, there's no reason anyone should profit from your time without giving something back. And some people are still trying to make a living out of this...
I've had stuff published for free copies of the book.
If I were you, I'd be tempted to for go a fee if they referenced your website / link to your gallery for your paintings.
