Have we done this yet?

The European parliament is currently engaged in the adoption of some copyright reforms. If adopted, freedom of panorama would be restricted throughout all EU states. According to the proposed amendment, the right to freely use images of works permanently located in public spaces would always be subject to prior authorisation. Unless the legal affairs committee rejects the proposal, hundreds of thousands of images on Wikipedia would be subject to copyright restrictions and would face the risk of being removed.

Your voices have been heard by the European Parliament and by the European Commission! After handing over the half a million signatures yesterday, the parliament voted today with a big majority against any restriction of the Freedom of Panorama!

To be fair the whole thing was mental and completely misinformed. The European parliament doesn't legislate - there was never any danger of anything happening! A couple of weeks ago, they voted to break up google - as far as i know that's not happened...

Not...

If the information in the link above is correct it would appear to show that democracy is alive and well in the EU...

Good riddance to bad nonsense. Half a million signatures? Is that more than Jeremy C***kson fans/detractors? Must be important stuff....*

*Edit. Argh look what I did. The ironing of involuntary, poetic self-ownage never fails to depress me.

Interesting little aside in that link.

However, we do not forget about photographers from France, Italy and other countries that currently don’t enjoy this Freedom.

That's news to me. You restricted taking photos in France?

I understand (it was on the internet so must be true) that you can't take pictures of the Eiffel Tower at night. (The lighting display is copyrighted)

My understanding is that it's ok to take photos but not to post them on social media or for sites like Wikipedia to use them as they could be used for commercial purposes.

Don't understand whether the 'authorisation' needs to come from the owner of the picture or the owner of the copyright of the artwork...
