The Mrs just made a hash of trying to back up her phones photos then promptly deleted them before realising all she had done was create short cuts to them.
Does anybody know of any software (free would be nice) that can recover them?

Oh and its an Android phone

Cheers

Davie

Not off the top of my head but to maximise your chances of recovery, stop using the phone. Immediately. Just stop it. Completely and utterly.

Also..where are the photos stored? On the phone or on a memory card in the phone?

Ok short answer is yes there's a way. Android is based on the Linux OS, when you delete something what you actually do is delete the link to that place in memory. So long as nothing is written over that place in the phone's memory then the information is recoverable.

So. In addition to previous advice about not using the phone, turn off the wifi, bluetooth and data connections, this should be enough to prevent further information being written to the phone's memory.

Not being harsh or sarky here, but Shirley there can't be that many photos to have been in the internal memory?

I used software called Phoenix Photo recovery, to recover some photos off an sd card. It also works on had drives as far as I remeber.

Beware ads saying that they can recover stuff for you...the ones I've been looking at are mostly a) scams or b) snake oil salesman.

I guess you have a computer in the house? Are you running Mac, windows or Linux?

I agree with the scams thing, she found something earlier that looked like it was working and all was sunshine and rainbows until it wanted $50 to complete the task even though it was touted as free :/

Nowt but Windows 10 in the house these days, I finally gave up on XP last year 😥

Hm ok. From your answer I'm thinking the best thing to do may well be to take it to a local business and pay them a few quid to get it done. The recoveries I'm looking at are all Linux based and take a fair amount of computer savvy to achieve anything.

Basically the idea with data recovery is as follows:

1) Stop using the device and disconnect all services which can write to the device.
2) Make two immediate backups of the device.
3) Begin investigatory data recovery process on backed-up data (so if you bork it, you always have the original raw data to return to)
4) Recover what you can. No guarantees.
