My traveling plans have been well and truly scuppered due to ill health so Im considering spending some time getting to grips with photo editing software and doing some video editing as well. I need to do something to haul my photography out of the gutter.

I've got my eye on one of the Photoshop creative suites and looking to buy something in the not too distant future while Im still a student.

The last Photoshop I used was 7.0 and I understand a lot has changed since then. The package comes with Adobe Premier CS4 Pro (I think). Is this software any good for video editing?

Would Light Room be a better consideration?

Thanks folks

photoshop outside of a casual/home user place is the only photo editing software worth knowing, I don't feel it has evolved to he point you'll be confused. It can be bought separate from the rest of the adobe suite. Also it will make the learning curve to in design/illustrator a bit more natural.

Video software I'll leave to someone else.

I use sony Vegas - it has 3 different versions depending on cost - v easy to use. There is alo the adobe one - Premier - I downloaded a copy but for home use was far to complicated for me - seemed very "Pro". Photoshop versions are similar to each other so I also don't think you would have a problem with newer versions 🙂

Ok thanks for the info.

Think Ill take the plunge and get the whole package...and look forward to a few months of swearing at the computer when it goes wrong (even more than I do now).

I use lightroom and love it. Also have elements 6.0 but rarely use it. Lightroom does everything I need and has a nice 'workflow' type of interface.

Other than that I've only used the stuff that came with my Canon camera which is annoying to use by comparison.

For video editing I don't have anything. Tried the windows standard one and really didn't like it. I'll look into getting something new for this year.

Premiere CS4 is very powerful - a little fiddly to use, but no more so than most of the other powerful video editing programs.

Photoshop again very powerful, and if money is not an object, it is worth having - it is not much harder to use than the cheaper options either. As a bonus, pretty much every tutorial is based on it.

Bear in mind when you say "I need to do something to haul my photography out of the gutter" Photoshop is not going to anything to help there - it can make a good photo just right, but it really doesn't do much good for a boring or bad photo. Getting a good photo is still all about pressing the camera button at the right time whilst pointing it at the right thing (and possibly using the right settings, but that is a bit more of an advanced thing, and less important). Probably, like most 'creative' things, the best thing you can do to improve your photographs is to take pictures and invite other photographers to insult them (on courses they call it a 'crit' session or something). The advice you get will probably include tons of useless comments from people with no souls saying that you should learn about the 'rule of thirds' or other such junk but if you learn to take everything with a pinch of salt and sort out what is actually useful advice for you, having people be rude about your work is one of the best ways to improve at stuff, much better than showing them to people in a situation where social pressures encourage people not to be rude.
