Hi all,

Currently backing up phone photos to Google Photos. I understand you can tell it to delete all pictures off the phone which are already back up (and taken more than 30 days ago).

Does anyone know if its possible to get it to (ideally automatically) delete pictures off the phone that are backed up, and older than 12 months (or some other age)?

I want to make space on my phone, but also like having recent-ish pics on my phone (ie don't need to be online to view them).

Or do any other backup services have this feature?

Thanks,
Duane.

If they're backed up to Google Photos, can't you just view them on your phone and delete them off once they've been backed up? How often are you away from wifi or data??

My only word of advice here is to be very wary of using Google Photos. The controls are not simple, and for this reason I have always avoided it.
Last week, after allowing an App on my phone access to my photo gallery it secretly activated Google Photos in the background. Once I found out I deleted all the photos Google had stolen from my phone, only to find Google had also deleted these photos in my phone gallery. I was raging. The only reason I have held off buying Apple phones is because I know I will break/ lose it at some stage and wasn't prepared to lose that type of money. However, following this latest episode I will be getting an iPhone. I really don't like Google/ Android at all. Rant over.

Really?
It asks me each and every folder that appears with pics, what I want to do with it. It asks before cleaning up, it asks for settings to be changed etc. Did you just hit accept to everything?

This appears to have recently changed unless I'm missing something...

I understand now if you delete a photo using Google photos app this now also deletes it from the device/phone. I'm sure this wasn't the case previously in that yes they synced but could have files independently. The recent reviews of the Google photos app seems to support this.

Last time I did it asked you to confirm removing it from everywhere

On my phone Photos app it comes up with a warning. In Chrome browser it pops up a warning saying it'll be deleted from Google Account , Google Drive and any place it is shared. The warnings are pretty obvious

No warnings, no permissions requested with the exception of allowing the App access. And it wasn't a 'dodgy' App. I didn't even have a Google Photos account!

Interesting as it's the exact opposite for me here

My only word of advice here is to be very wary of using Google Photos. The controls are not simple, and for this reason I have always avoided it.

You loaded the app and set it off and it worked and did it's thing.

Once I found out I deleted all the photos Google had stolen from my phone, only to find Google had also deleted these photos in my phone gallery. I was raging.

In which case you linked the 2 storage solutions which then allowed that to delete the other ones. In androd you have to allow read/write access to everything, for this to happen you would have had to enable that.

I didn’t even have a Google Photos account!

Where did you find the pics? Sounds like they are either in google pics or you deleted them.

The point here is that this App set up a Google Photos account without me realising. It was super sneaky. All I did was click on the installed App (Chess) and allow it access to my photos and it all happened in the background. At no stage did I click yes to allowing a Photos account to be made nor did I give permission for linking/ syncing with my phone. And this is not the first time Google has activated things without me fully realising what was going on.

To be blunt I find android permissions statements a bit too much, each app asks for specific permissions to access and do what it wants to do. I'm struggling to call it sneaky in many ways. You will probably have a photo's account by default as it's part of your google account but you have always had to tell something to back up or delete from it. If google photo's manage your pics - which you have to allow then it will become your photo management app so deleting them will delete it.

For me Google Photos is one of the many reasons I stay with Android.

I think it's a marvellous app/feature.

Your issue seems with a chess app.
If you have Android, you have a Google photos, maps, notes, gmail and more already set up.

Google photos is ace - I clear up my phone once a month, and every few months clear up the online storage.
It's simple and warns me ask the time what I'm doing.

At the risk of repeating myself I do not (did not) have a photos account. I was very careful to disable/ unlink this as I am with all other extraneous Google software that tries to make you use it.

My issue is with Google allowing the Chess App to do this. A.N.Other company would not allow this to happen.

Nor do I any more, but for a different reason. If Google make a product or feature and get it to the point where it is 95%+ perfect, they will then almost certainly scrap it then move you over to a replacement which has a bunch of features missing.

Thanks for replies.

Any time I am on the tube, on a plane, or in a non-European country. Not that often, but often enough.

I just find it odd that there is no middle ground - you either have all your photos ever on your device, or you have none at all (from the point of deleting) - unless you manually select the pics you want to delete.

If you use the Google Files app it can do exactly what you want.

Firstly you can select whole days or weeks at once, for removal from phone.

secondly Google files will do it all really quickly.

I've a huge SD card, photos are on there so I rarely need to delete to create space.
