Yesterday i managed to snag the phone line cable when i was hoovering. Last night the phone worked but had very bad interference but the broadband works fine.
This morning i check the phone and it's completely dead. I went and bought a brand new bt master socket https://www.amazon.co.uk/Openreach-Telephone-Master-Socket-Faceplate/dp/B07NX2KC8Y/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=bt+openreach+master+socket+mk4&qid=1695656966&sr=8-1
Connected it up but still have the same issue. Phones completely dead no dial tone or anything but broadband works fine.
Ive copied the wiring like for like from the old socket. My house is 1980's so have black and green with the orange and white unplugged.
Has anyone any idea what the problem could be? Was working fine last night but bad interference which made me think id somehow damaged the faceplate knocking the wire but this morning when i checked there's nothing at all?
Thanks
I wonder if you shorted the cable and it tripped something in the exchange. Although you'd think it would reset...
You used to be able to phone BT (from another line) and they would run a line test for you....
Yeah i did try that but as im with sky talk i have to go through them. Ive called them and have an engineer booked but  he's not coming for a few days. Don't really need the phone so not an issue but confused as to what could have happened.
I moved the unit in front of it and it snagged the phone wire pretty hard. Ive taken the faceplate front off and gone into the master socket but still completely dead.
Phone line? Not had one of them for years !
Try plugging in another phone to check its not that cable that is damaged.

You can do it yourself using a thing called the internet.
I remember phone lines too. Crazy to think you had to be at home to answer your phone.
It won't have damaged anything in the exchange. The phone needs a pair of wires but broadband will work to some extent on one wire.
Check it's not the cable/plug on the phone side (try another phone).
Cut back on the cable incase it's damaged (move the socket so the wires still reach).
I'm not familiar with that socket (I haven't done copper lines for years) but it looks like a tool-less IDC termination, so you would insert the wires without stripping them and push the cover down. Others need an IDC punchdown tool, or have screws where you would strip the wires.
If you had anything else plugged into the socket, or an extension, damage in those can also cause faults despite being 'after' the first socket.
As it's damaged, you are likely to be charged for an engineer visit.
Is there a storm outside? Have a strange couple broken down outside and found your house as a place of refuge? Do you find yourself wearing lipstick and suspenders? Do you have a slave called Rocky?
Put it back as it was, hide whatever you got off ebay, ring Sky, tell them "it just stopped working" and get them to invoke Openreacharound.
