I've got a Nexus 5, and I like it. It just works, no provider bloatware, good screen, decen battery, reasonably quick. Her phone's on it's last legs (Sony something) and she doesn't want one as big as the 5. Given you can pick up Nexus 4's for about a ton on eBay, is there anything else I/she should be looking at?

Moto G is worth a look. Pretty similar to the Nexus with a fairly straight version of android. Some models have an SD card slot, too.

The Amazon Fire is £99 for 32 GB today. Locked to O2 mind.

My wife said she'd not get on with such a big phone either - since having the 5 you'd have to pry it out of her cold dead hands! But the 4 was my previous phone and it was pretty damn good to be honest. Got a One+ now and to be honest it probably is a bit too big as it sticks into my hip if I bend over with it in my pocket.

My nexus 4 packed up last week after 2 years, plumped for a motorola moto g, very similar, same size screen but smaller phone. Tesco are doing them for £115 in black or white or 139 for 5" screen. So far very impressed with it, no complaints. I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand nexus4 if I were you, a lot of them were developing dead zones on the screen, and if out of warranty then goodbye £100.
The big stores will have them in stock - http://www.tesco.com/direct/tesco-mobile-motorola-moto-g-4g-black/171-1231.prd?skuId=171-1231

Moto G here in the oab household. It knocks the spots of a Galaxy ace 3 and 4, and my HTC Desire X.

MrsJ has a Moto G and she's well pleased with it. So does bro and bro-in-law, so it's been a popular purchase round here.

If you go for the Nexus 4 avoid the 8gb version.

MotoG.

Had a Nexus 4 and loved it but have 4G in my area now and the Nexus 4 isn't 4G compatible as far as I'm aware.

I have an IPhone 5S at the moment but run a MotoG for all the free stuff (pirate content) on Android....Showbox is awesome and seems to have films available the same week they get a cinema release...just over £100 and stock Android, if it had access to iTunes I'd dump my iPhone.

I just bought another nexus 4 a couple of weeks ago after I smashed my last one (and a new one was cheaper than the repair). Love it to bits, battery life sucks but I knew that. If you're asking if it's still running well, it flies along just like the day I bought it.

No 4g but £100 was literally the top of my budget and for that it's a steal.

You can get a "Very Good" condition Xperia Z1 Compact from Amazon Warehouse at the moment for £179 - if you select which one from the options there (i.e. top choice on the linked page) you can get one that's basically in brand new condition. Very good price considering the spec even compared to more recent phones + the right sort of size for what she's after.
