Is there any phone or network company that deal in child specific tariffs? It's for my 10 year old son, didn't really want him having a phone but apparently all his friends have them now and he really wants one for Christmas, wanting something around £10 a month with blocks on it if he goes over his limits, all advise much appreciated, thanks.
Pay as you go?
I'm with vodafone on quite a basic deal and they gave me an add on contract for my son (12), which is about £7 a month. Our problem is that he never remembers to charge it up! Maybe your provider has a similar deal.

Carphone warehouse do one where you can set a cap on how much the monthly bill will be.
Our kids were on PAYG until about 10 or 11 but we trusted them after that.
We do have friends whose kids have run up £100's of bills in a month on data charges and texting photo's etc.
In our house, they get one when they go to secondary school. Even then I am not sure...
Pay as you go - no massive bills. Anything over £10 per month top up, they pay.
Cheaper second hand phone (he will drop it/trash it). If they want posh, save up. Then they *may* look after it better.
All on Vodafone and Android, because I can put Vodafone Guardian on it - their phone shuts off at bed time, on again at breakfast next day - it will not work apart from call to emergency services or mum. Any text or call they can reject, and mrs_oab gets a text telling her they did so and what number. It also restricts internet browser on phone to only working at home, via our router and other safeguards against porn.
A child cannot legally have a contract - a contract with a phone company counts as a credit agreement (I think) which is why the parent has to have the agreement SO
pay as you go as suggested above.
Maybe when they get a bit older in their mid-teens add them to your contract but with the proviso of you pay for going over. Our son still bemoans our cruelty ("it's against my human rights"... cue adult giggling) in taking back the £150 for the month he went mad on the image texting. He did learn his lesson though.

Vodafone sim only with automatic monthly top up for my 13year old daughter. Works a treat with no overage possible

Giffgaff with a 'goodybag' is pay as you go that works like a contract (in that the allowance is used monthly and resets each month).

Any overspend comes out of credit, so if there's no credit there can be no overspend. You can top up the goodybag from credit card automatically but it can't charge you.

Yep, had my kid on the Carphonewarehouse £7.50 deal since he was 10.
Once you have it, you can phone the provider and tell them it's for a kid and they'll set the caps etc.
ps. It's really good for texting as the kids use an app called Kik (sp), so don't use any text allowance!
Just got my Dad a contract through Ovivo on the freedom tariff was very skeptical at first but after three weeks use it's great and works on the Voda network. The deal was you pay £20 for the SIM card and you get 200 mins 300 txt and 500mb of data. Once you register and activate the sim £15 of the original £20 is credited to your account as a top up if you go over your allowance. If they use up all of their monthly allowance and there credit (as a pay as you go) then the phone will stop working. The best thing is it is FREE and works that you watch a 5 sec advert when you connect to the internet which you can block on some phones. No way they can run up any bill at all as you do not need to input any bank details as you pay the initial £20 via PayPal. Hope this helps.
Three £6-90 month 12 mth sim only 500 meg 200 mins 5000 text give him old handset, or that what I did for ny lad 10, he never uses it but I can phone him if he's gone round block on bike with his friend, all capped as well so he couldn't go over.!!!!

We are all on it and the kids have theirs capped at £0 (over monthly bill), but they can still call us even if they've 'spent-up' as we've all free 3-to-3 calls.

My daughter got the 7.50 capped deal from tesco, htc basic smart phone in with the deal.
