[Closed] Philips TV Ambilight feature playing up

Any advice welcomed please.
We unpacked and set up a brand new Philips 43" model with the Ambilight feature a few days ago. Tonight, no Ambilight. Then after a bit of faffing around in the menu, it seemed to come on. Then shortly went off again, then came back on right side and top only. Then the left came back on. Then we switched it off and on (not mains power, granted) and the lights are off again. So it's intermittent to say the least, and feels faulty.
Will be ringing Curry's for a replacement tomorrow, unless anyone's got any helpful suggestions based on similar experience? Is it worth a firmware update, maybe? (I've not tried that, its too late at night to be starting that game)

What are you using if not mains?

I had to send two LG tellys back because of weird issues which LG told me were because I was using an extension lead.

Perhaps these new tellys are especially sensitive to power?

Not had any issues with ours, apart from when the kids dick about with the settings. Check it's not setup with any of the "follow sound" or perhaps "follow picture" options.

Few days old? Send it back. And buy a biggerer one 😁

Sorry - don't get distracted by the 'mains power' statement - it was poorly phrased, all that meant was that I'd not thought to switch it off & on at the wall yet. Have done that now, and just done a software upgrade, and it's made SFA difference.
@rich_s When you say "Check it’s not setup with any of the “follow sound” or perhaps “follow picture” options", what should it be setup to do? I assumed 'Follow picture' was the most logical?

Tried factory reset?

I wonder if this will turn into another Currys customer service horrorshow thread...

as above, there are a few settings in there regarding what it actually does, and how strongly it does it. Follow sound, follow picture, movie mode, gaming mode blah blah blah.

You can just have "ambilight ON" and that will tell you if the bulbs are working?
I think you can turn the AL on only (ie, with the TV remaining off), by pressing the AL button on the remote.

I run ours on follow picture obv, but on a slightly surpressed option. we have it in an alcove to the gaming one is savagely bright.

Also, ensure all the software updates have run, that is in the menus too. It took ours a few goes and restarts to settle down.

After that, sounds like it could be a bad wiring connection to me.

We use follow picture. I've never tried some of the weirder settings but I can imagine they might do strange things. Assuming you've done the reset idea I'd just return to sender.

@Olly - yes, it looks like the bulbs, or maybe internal wiring to them, are on the blink. The last time I looked at it downstairs, they were all back on, but there was a distracting flickering taking place, combined with it generally not following the hues of the picture at all. So definitely not working as designed.

Thanks all, sending it back and swapping it out for a replacement is the conclusion I've come to too, so the return is in hand.
Somewhat complicated by the fact that, for the collection, DPD insist on the thing being 'securely packaged'. Which in turn kind of implies putting it back in its original packaging. You can guess who went to the local recycling centre a couple of days ago, before the lights started playing silly buggers, and disposed of the box and polystyrene?

Can you get Currys to agree to a return, rather than a replacement?
Go an buy a new one and then use that box to return the borked one?

It turns out, rather to my surprise, that the kind folks at DPD are due to deliver an empty box tomorrow (hopefully some bubblewrap etc at the same time) which they will then collect when I've filled it with the TV, the day after. It's then due to go back into Curryland for investigation or assessment. At which point, all being well, they'll pronounce it BLR and give us the option of refund or replace.
That's what I'm hoping & expecting to happen; my wife is rather less optimistic that it'll all go quite so smoothly. She may well be correct, as she often is.

Why would you want it to be looked at - if it’s new then only a replacement will do.

I don't particularly, but that seems to be their 'process'. Getting through to the Cust Service agents, and explaining what we'd like to happen, has been somewhat trying.
It's been working and not working intermittently again through the day today, according to reports from my wife who's been using it. I will be sticking a small piece of masking tape or similar in a hidden area so that I'll at least be able to tell if they send us a new one, or if this one comes back instead.

You can do that, I'd be more inclined to just take a pic of the serial number...

Good thought🤣! It's been a funny old day, Dud, as Peter Cooke used to say.

I’d just return it for a refund under the distance selling regulations assuming you bought it online. Then buy one elsewhere….

Ignore this, just do what oceanskipper said. And then go to a decent retailer for a bigger one.
