hi has anyone else had an email claiming to be from PHD (Pete Hutchinson Designs) about phishing security? I've got one sitting in my inbox but i'm not opening it, it looks dodgy as to me.

Bought some great kit off them a couple of years ago so they do have my address if they have been hacked.

Cheers all

I've got one as well. Just zapped it.

IIRC, they were compromised last year so it may be another episode of that.

Yeah I had a feeling that it had happened before but couldn't remember when, or even if i'd had an email that time.

Miss Vader just got one too apparently.

Yeah it was the 'Dear' bit I could see in the inbox that makes it look all Crown Prince Nigeria

I got it earlier today. I did open it (perhaps shouldn't have), google mail didn't flag it as spam. The contents are (I copied this to a text editor then back out so there's nothing hidden transferred from the email):

Security Awareness Email from PHD

Phishing is a type of attack used by computer hackers to harvest personal information.

They can do this by creating e-mails that look like they are being sent by a legitimate company.

If you click on a link in a phishing e-mail you can end up at a mock-up of the legitimate company’s website where you might be asked for credit card or other information.

If you supply this information it may be used to commit fraud.

Be Aware

The simplest way to protect yourself from phishing emails is to avoid clicking on any unexpected or suspicious looking links in an e-mail message. If the email looks too good to be true (e.g. “you have won a competition, click this link”) then be suspicious. Also be suspicious if the email contains poor spelling or grammar.

Remember, you can verify that you are visiting PHD’s legitimate website by looking at your web browser bar. Our website uses a secure connection (https) and our company name (Peter Hutchinson Designs Ltd) and location (Harrogate, GB) appears. These details are verified by Geotrust.

You can check you are visiting PHD's genuine website by looking in the browser bar. You will see our company name and location.

PHD were hacked a while ago and they sent out a warning email then. The oddest part about the email is that the salutation is just "Dear ,"

(Reposted as the new forum totally fubars the formatting of pasted text and when I tried to edit it the post disappeared!)

@Vader There's a bug (surprise, surprise) in the text entry field code. I copied and pasted the PHD text but it appeared wrapped in HTML italic tags rather than actually being italic. I then went to edit it and when I clicked submit, the whole post just disappeared! I then re-wrote the post.

For future reference, I'm male BTW 🙂
