On the way home today it overheated and stalled when I dipped the clutch, managed to jump start it while it was still rolling (on a single carriageway bridge, I would have caused a proper jam!), got it another 1/4 mile and it cut out again and wouldn't restart. When I try to start it it sounds like the starter is just spinning but the engine is definitely turning (looked through the oil filler and the cam is turning, aux belt is turning as well).
I've been running it with a leaky head gasket for a while as no water was in the oil so I'm thinking I've trashed it. Any idea why it would make the starter sound weird?
Running it with a coolant leak leading to overheating. Head warps, losing you the compression on the rest of the cylinders. No compression = no resistance against starter, so just sounds like it's spinning.
If you wanted to keep it, shouldn't have run it with a blown head gasket.
Low compression.
Maybe melted a piston but I reckon more likely burnt the gasket out on 2 and 3.
Head off time...

Yep, sounds like that's it. It was very hot!

Yeah I know, sorry dad 😂😂😂😂
Doing the cam belt was such a pig of a job that its been putting me off doing the head gasket. It was a cheap van but I liked it.

It's not that bad at all - but I guess if you don't have the tools to get that outer pulley off it becomes a pig.
And more so getting to the head isn't that bad either. Been in there and reshimming the tappets on the way out is fun too but worthwhile.
I'd expect you've done more damage now though.
The starter sounding wierd like metal grinding metal ?

@duncancallum reckon it's worth trying?
Given your story above id be more inclined to buy one of the many 200 quid engines on fleebay assuming it's a dw8 engine and throwing that at it.

@trail_rat slightly, bit more of a high pitch whirring noise
I'd take head off and have a look.
I've seen them burn out over the fire ring.
But depends how hot it got.....
Good bit of 1.9 xud and dw appreciation here. I would love to learn how to do what you can do re. replacing cambelt etc. I take it none of you are down south? If you were I be begging for a ride/mechanics tutorial one day.
