Hi all,
Hoping someone on here can help out. I've got a Mountfield Multiclip 501 mower which has the Chinese(?) 140cc engine fitted. It's a few years old now and has had a hard life (I inherited it, it was the father in laws he used to mow near on an acre of rough grass with it all the time).
Now, I was having problems with it last year which was sorted by cleaning out the carb nozzles and using easy start to get the old beast going but the power seemed quite weak. This year I cleaned out the nozzles of the carb nipped to the Shell garage and got some nitro plus unleaded for it and refilled the tank. After a few go's (again using easy start) it spluttered into life on full choke, the problem is it's turning over too slowly and sounds very laboured, it's just got no guts. I've had it running for a couple of minutes thinking it will clear itself but eventually it stalls. I can't justify buying another petrol mower as we've only got small gardens but as it was the father in laws I'd like to get it back running if possible.
I had thought it could possibly be the spark plug but I don't have the tool to remove the thing!
Any other thoughts?

Cheers

I changed the air filter late last year, the plug hasn't budged since I've had it I don't have the spanner. I was just wondering if it could be anything else or it's just knackered.

Sounds 4 stk but easy way to tell is - does it have an oil dip stick.

If its 4 stroke im going with perished carb diaphraghm. If you get the spark plug out ill bet its dry and possibly white deposits from lack of fuel getting through,

If its 2 stroke and you didnt know- im going with ****ed piston from lack of lube 🙂

Yes it's got an oil dipstick so it must be a 4 stroke. Carb diaphragm you say, I know it's a cheap part but is it easy to fit?
Cheers

I have no idea on that engine bud.

Im just speculating off the symptoms your giving and knowledge of the 4stk system. The fact you have been in and cleanned the carbs already would suggest your in the general area - possibly only a couple more bolts off to get into it - would certainly be te case on my suffolk punch 4 stroke.

I've had similar symptoms on my hayter mower which uses a briggs & stratton 4 stoke, and it was due to dirt in the fuel. The fuel pick up was partially blocked.

I took the carb off and cleaned the fuel filter. Emptied the tank and cleaned it out, put it all back together again with some clean fuel and it was fine.

This was from a couple of days ago, any use?

I'd be getting the plug out / replaced too, a plug wrench is only a few quid (or there's usually one lying unused in every socket set ever produced).
