Recently got a puppy and wondered if anyone had any recommendations or thoughts towards pet insurance as it's a whole new world for me!

I believe petplan is best but you pay more for that.

We use Argos but luckily haven't had to claim so don't know how good they actually are....

That's spooky, I was literally just on the petplan website getting a quote for the same thing (we collect ours in a couple of weeks).

Pet plan seems quite expensive (more than my car insurance) and more than double than others that I've seen, so I'm curious if it's worth the extra.

Watching with interest!

We took out PetPlan in December when we got our pup. We had a bit of a scare with him in January which required a general and a load of X-rays, and some drugs. Thankfully he is fine, however the bill was over £500. The vet submitted the claim direct to PetPlan and the money, minus the £100 excess was in our account in about 3 days.

My GF used Argos for her cats insurance. She looked at a few options and went for Argos which was accepted at the local vet. Fingers crossed there will be no issues with the current claim for a few stitches in the cats leg which had a mid range 3 figure sum attached to it 😲

Whatever you do get it done tonight! I got mine done a week after we took deliver of the puppy. The next week he got sick. Puking and shitting everywhere because he’d eaten something in the garden...

Ended up spending two night in doggy hospital because he got so dehydrated.

Turns out you’re not covered til 2 weeks after you take out the policy. Some are different but apparently that’s quite common.

He’s fine now. Still eats shit all the time but he’s big enough to ride the shit storm 😉 little bugger. Wouldn’t change him for the world though. Happy dog ownership OP!

We use PetPlan (and have made loads of claims).
~$50cdn per month, we pay 20%, annual limit $15,000.
Got all sorts of stuff covered that I didn't think we would (heartworm and allergies mostly).

Would recommend...

We've pet insurance on all our pets (2 dogs and 2 cats).
Over the last 12 months they've paid out 2k, insurance is around 1k a year.... So definitely get it....
Ive always used a combo of Quidco and comparison sites to work out who is cheapest/best cover.
The Quidco cash back pays for new bike parts....

Petplan. Claimed quite a bit over the years on two labs and they’ve been nothing but fantastic. Absolutely zero trouble and all done direct through the vets so we haven’t had to pay upfront.
We have a 7k max limit and the week before Xmas my 8 yr old lab was referred to a specialist where an MRI scan confirmed a slipped disc in the neck area of the spinal column. Straight in for surgery from the MRI and we had her home 2 days later looking like a new dog. We had to pay £40 admin fee for them to do the claim direct and it has maxxed us out for the year but absolutely no issues with petplan paying.
Yes it costs more (and it’ll continue rising) but I’ve always found them excellent to deal with.

We use Bought By Many

(Stealth link which will get me a £20 voucher if you sign up!)

£20/month, had 2 claims so far with no problem, £69 excess, cover up to £7k I think

I've just signed up for PetProtect. Looked at Waggle but didn't like the way their excess seemed to work as you paid a percentage of the vet fees e.g. 25%, so if you had a £6k bill (my brother did or his Cocker for a back op) then you're having to stump up 25% of that. Also looked at PetPlan and it was over double the price for, on the face of it similar coverage...but no doubt hey are 'the best' bt you don't half pay for it and people I know on other insurance policies have never had any issues claiming when they've had to.

The only thing to look out for is that some seem to ramp up prices when the dog is older. This happened to my brother. You sign up for a life policy then they significantly ramp up the price at some point and if you try to move whith the dog at that age you pay alot more.

Whatever you do get it done tonight! I got mine done a week after we took deliver of the puppy. The next week he got sick. Puking and shitting everywhere because he’d eaten something in the garden…

Thought you got a months cover from the breeder? I was told this from my breeder so have set my policy to begin one month after we picked up the puppy.

Gone with Petplan, went via Quidco to get a 10% discount and £42.50 cashback.
Price worked out roughly the same as most others that way.
Got 4 weeks free insurance from the vets when we registered her so the 2 week thing shouldn't matter as they'll over run (slightly naughty but....).

We have our pup insured with Bought By Many too. It was a bit cheaper than Pet Plan but the cover seems to be just as good, and they seem well regarded going by the research I did.

The important thing is to get lifetime cover.

What happens is dogs are fine, fine, fine, maybe some minor stuff that you could afford anyway, and then either they develop a chronic condition that's going to require £££ treatment for the next few years, or, aged 10, BLAM they get cancer AND a nasty injury AND dental problems AND another expensive condition that needs surgery and before you know it, the vets bills could have bought you a decent secondhand hatchback, and the dog then tops it all by expiring.

Petplan ain't cheap that's for sure - 9 year old large dog here => £111/month - but that's the top ranked package. Basically we have completely decoupled the pain of losing the money from the distress of having a sick or dead dog.

We did once experiment with the "just pay bills from the slush fund" and had the (see paragraph 2) experience.

Essentially we are paying for our own emotional well-being 😉 as we can just go, "whatever's needed" to the vets and just concentrate on looking after whoever has just splatted bloody diarrhoea over the kitchen floor.
