Watched this last night, really good doc about the "hipster movement" and its social context. Entertaining as well as insightful.

It was an entertaining doc. Some luxuriant beards there.
Just looked at Beardy's magazine site. He seems to have, errr, branched out...
Watched this the other week. Found myself laughing out loud at some of the phrases used and shouting ****er at the screen at some of the characters.... All this despite sitting there on my 1960's Danish chair with my beard and plaid shirt.
In my defence I've not had a proper shave for years and I'm not lacking in feeling manly... No sitting at a desk being "creative" here, I'm a chippy so looking like an unkempt redneck goes with the job.
My girlfriend did not know what a hipster was and I was struggling to explain them to her. Vague mutterings of fixie single speeds, beards, hair, tight jeans & glasses were just greeted by a slightly confused look.
This program was a superb way of explaining things to her.
Can't watch it til later, but do they really all think they're 'individuals'?

He doesn't really go into the conformist aspect of the "look", but there's plenty of fascinating economic and social stuff.
Personally, I was a hipster way before it was cool.

Given some of them think there is some kind of authenticity to wearing vintage workgear while drinking a 12-buck espresso and browsing a Macbook, it's quite possible.
The commercialisation of the hipster lifestyle is fascinating, but predictable, it's no different to the commercialisation of the new age/environmental movement that went before it.
My cousin was cultivating his beard for a while, but had to start getting it under control when his wife decided it had crossed the line from "[i]lumbersexual[/i]" to "[i]hobosexual[/i]".
Excellent programme, though sadly now the craze is almost over.
Once Pret moved into Brick Lane, it was all over.

I thought it were a great documentary.
I came away feeling a little more fond of the principles behind it really.
I mean, I suppose there were some pretty middle class ideas but trying to restore value in the well made and valuing craft seemed like a nice thing to me.
