heard him commentating on the Masters and didn't recognize his voice, turned down an OBE don't you know (making 19th hole conversation ;D )
Ah no way😢
Loved his commentary over the years
Sad. He was the voice of golf when I was growing up. Spent many hours with my dad listening to him.
That makes me really sad.I had the great pleasure of caddying for Peter a few years ago. He was playing one of his " A round with Alliss" charity golf games at Swinley Forest GC (very exclusive).Three members of Blackheath GC had won an auction to play with him for charity.
He was an absolute pleasure to be with. He gave the three Blackheath members a lot of value for their money. Non-stop jokes, banter and anecdotes.
To caddy for him was a delight and although I was getting paid to caddy I'd have happily paid for the pleasure. I got a lift in his Bentley and he made sure I was properly looked after. Kind, courteous, entertaining.......
And of course, I always enjoyed his broadcasts with all their wit and humour.
RIP Peter.... and no more 3 putts (he would understand).
Sad news, but he led a full and seemingly very happy life working in a sport he loved.
Voice of my childhood, and managed to bring a seemingly dull game to life even on the radio. I'd imagine he'd be a fascinating dinner party guest with his anecdotes
Great voice delivering some great commentary; often with completely OT comments and observations. Really relaxing to listen to which I did a lot when I was golf mad in the late 80s.
RIP Peter.
Very sad, we think we know celebrities and some of us have the utter pleasure to meet them face to face and when those hopes come true it must be incredible
Golf will not be the same
He was brilliant. Such a contrast to the sky commentary, but I prefered it.
I also didn't recognise his voice at the masters...I know he's stayed at home and bbc allowed him to comentate from his house I think which was class.
As above, he was the voice of my childhood and youth. And even these last 20 odd years where I’ve lost all interest in golf, I still tuned in every now and then to hear his voice.
If Alliss was the voice of golf you're too young to remember Henry (hic) Longhurst. Particularly later in the day...
I liked Alliss but went off him gradually, his asides and off-topic comments started to make him sound like he might not be my kind of person.
Loved his commentating , great understanding of the game and some wonderful observations . When a player missed a 2ft put to win a big tournament he simply said Hmmm probably not the best time to ask him for his autograph .
