[Closed] Pet insurance for older dogs?

Anyone have any recommendations ?

To be clear I wouldn't advocate pet insurance for a new dog, best to put say £50 a month away in a separate account, I know this as this week I have had to have one of my BT's put down at the age of 14, the insurance premium was £75pm & apart from a claim when she was a puppy they paid us out nothing by refusing claims/making it difficult/ saying each treatment for skin complaints were separate & were subject to excess etc.

Anyway I digress, the 9YO BT's premium has just gone up to £75 (this seems to be the magic figure) albeit with a different insurer, this seems ridiculous for a heathy dog I have never had a claim for & I'm looking for a cheaper alternative or just basic accident/3rd party cover which is about £40pa. E&L seem sensible in comparison at about £370 with decent cover, has anyone had experience with them or care to recommend another insurer?

Many thanks.

Never use E&L. I recall a woman in our cats a couple of years ago with a several thousand pound surgery bill that E&L had declined to pay based on some fine print procedural crap. The vet said they had loads of issues with them actually paying out.

We’re with PetPlan for both of ours. Not the cheapest but have paid out way more than the premium cost over the 10 years our older dog has been insured.

I'm with Lifetime Pet Cover and have found them to be pretty good so far.

They were the only company I could find that would provide lifetime cover for my terrier who was 11 years old at the time.

Costs seem reasonable (I'm currently paying £45pcm for £5k worth of cover) and they've just paid out a few thousand for treatment for her too. You get the usual insurer type letters that make you feel as if you're doing something wrong when you are claiming but if you can overlook those, and I'm sure they all do it, you should be ok.

Our old BT passed away about a month ago now. Like yours she was 14 but had the best life.

We were insured with animal friends who had an older dog policy (dogs 8yrs and older)

Only basic cover and we would .only get a % of the claim paid out. In the end we didn't claim for her illness (Spinal Cancer) as we were upset and didn't want the hassle.

I think most insurances are a bit rubbish for older pets unless you paya massive premium buyer were only paying £13 per month for the basic policy

We stopped the insurance when it got to 75 a month and we shove 100 quid away a month into an account and hope for the best

Thanks all, maybe I'll speak to the vet to see who pays out & who doesn't, but thanks for the input & stuff paying out £900pa for dog insurance 😉

+1 for not using E&L. It took them about 3 months with me regularly contacting them to process our straightforward claim (they actually agreed to pay within a couple of weeks, then took the rest of the time to actually pay...) plus the amount we got was only about half of our costs after the excess.

We ended up cancelling the insurance and saving the money.

Animal friends gold policy for my 8.5 year lab is only £27 and I've had various claims over the years all paid no problem.
