Pet insurance and lifetime meaning

We have a renewal through from our insurer, they have added a new clause to say that the dog has to have been born in the UK, which is newly introduced. She was born in Bosnia.

I suspect they are entitled to do this, but it's not clear as we have ongoing health problems with her which will fall outside of any new policy we take.

What I can't find is whether we would be covered by them still as we were previously and have a 'lifetime' policy. Or whether we need to find a new insurer and accept that any costs for the ongoing problems she has will fall to us.

Googling has left me with no solid answers so far, but there are people on here who know answers to everything, right?

Also, totally aware this is part of owning a pet, not looking to dodge telling the truth to the insurer or suggesting this would be an option, just trying to work out if you can be evicted from a 'lifetime' policy by a change in terms!

We're with Petplan lifetime cover and as far as I'm aware you need to maintain the policy throughout to be covered. Not renewing an existing policy and taking out a new policy would mean pre existing conditions aren't covered.

Or at least that's what I was told a few years back when I queried my renewal price Vs a new policy for the same pet.

I'd call or email the insurance company and ask them to clarify.

Ring them and ask them?

How can they sell you a policy for something that you don't qualify for?

Sounds like mis-selling!!

As advised speak to insurance co and ask, all insurance companies have to be seen to treat customers fairly now.

If you have a lifetime policy I would expect terms not to change through lifetime of policy, however I'm not an insurer so policy wording can change.

How would they know where the dog was born? Does she bark with a Bosnian accent?

On some policies “lifetime” often means 8 years after which premiums skyrocket

Pretty sure it's on her microchip!

Will double-check with the insurer, but figured they'll just stick with the terms change and say we can do one. But that doesn't feel helpful given the 'lifetime' tag. Still they have paid out about £10k in claims in the last 2 years for about £500 in policy costs.

Will double-check with the insurer,

Crazy thought - but why not just do that first?

You could even ask them about the 'lifetime' tag at the same time.

Then come on here and put up a helpful post naming names, for other pet owners who may not have noticed?

God, I need a coffee. 😀
