Why is it so expensive? I noticed earlier, 12 bottles in Morrison's are 17 quid. I don't mind partaking in a cold pint when in the pub either but it's usually the most expensive pint of the night.

A mates mother in law runs a fancy Chinese restaurant and apparently the brewery rep once said charge what you like for Peroni (within reason obviously) and people will stay buy it.

But who deemed it to be that little bit superior in the first place, they don't even really market it that much.

And yes before all the usual comments start, I'm a lager lout etc etc but I don't like real beer so that's not an option.

I remember over ten years ago being charged £4.50 for a pint of Peroni on Bristol waterfront. I was like wtf!? It doesn’t even taste nice!

Its that expensive because people will pay it as you've already said.

Back ehen i was poor i had a money making enterprise which involved getting phone calls from someone who organised people for market research things.

I did a peroni one which involvedme pretending to be a "cash rich time poor proffessional who worked hard for his money and wanted to show people i had a little cash" i got 50quid and a couple of pints and probably contributed to increasing the price a little more. 😂

It's perceived as a trendy drink but not sure why.

Same as San Miguel, it's perceived as being premium, I can remember around '93 it was the cheapest beer in the offy.

But then young Sicilians pay a pretty penny for bottles of tennents super, we probably get the better deal there.... 😊

Moretti's nicer than Peroni, and Amstel's nicer than Moretti. Dunno why they're so expensive.

Co-op Czech imported larger beer wins hands down against all the above mentioned beers.

The closest beer that can compete with that Co-op Czech imported larger is from Waitrose Czech imported Budweiser.

Cornish Pilser is good but only get that from the pub.

😀

San Miguel seems to be similar and cheaper so we go for that. Cant say I thought much of Moretti when first tried it in Italy a while back and, on are return, noticed it appearing more in the UK when I cant say Id ever noticed it before. We were recently in Rome and tried the Moretti La Bianca and liked that.

Do like a bit of Jupiler but that doesnt seem to have made it out of Belgium

Moretti’s nicer than Peroni, and Amstel’s nicer than Moretti.

I’d put Amstel 3rd but agree with the Moretti comment. It helps to have Italian friends. In the Italian owned pub we frequent once a month in London, we have a £20 cap afford to us by the owner for the 6 of us. £3.30 a pint for Moretti is ok.

Currently sitting in Pisa 27° drinking a pint of Nastro Azzuro the premium by Peroni, tastes pretty good with some Tuscan pizza

Is Tennents Super big there? I remember coming across a bar in Milan decked out in Tennents Super livery. It was too early in the day to investigate further

I prefer Menabrea if we're talking Italian lager... although decent wine is dirt cheap when you're there

In Italy, it's considered a high quality, imported beer. I was at a business lunch there a few years ago and one of the beers offered with the sandwiches, was the "Purple Tin", although it was in 250ml bottles. When I explained the image it had in the UK, they were very surprised.

I've taken a liking for Estrella lately but San Miguel and Peroni I like too. Ultimately, there is always an offer on one or the other somewhere so I just stock up when the opportunity arises.

Paid over £40 for six pints of ale the other night.

That's atrocious, but if you don't like it you can always stay home. 🙂

Cough, Brexit, cough.

Seriously for a second, there are far better bottled lagers out there than syrup.

Moretti is just Italian for Heineken, to the point where it's brewed in the Netherlands.

Most lagers are owned by huge companies such as Heineken, doesn't always mean its the same stuff.

Lots of snobbery about lager, but it's perfect on a hot summer's day...

The Peroni tax is a marketing win, used to be the same price as any other lager but they decided to differentiate. Easier to whack a quid a pint on top than improve the taste. Very successful.

I had a pint of red stripe this evening. I bet it's made in a massive factory in the Midlands. Still enjoyed it and briefly fantasized about Jamaica. So there.

We got free Peronis the other night cos the actual ale I wanted in the pizza/grill/burgery place was off. It's ok but not 'premium'

& don't get me started about Pro ****ing secco!

I agree, it just makes me sad that you get a decent imported lager, then it either gets bought by a multinational/the multinational starts making it to price and it ends up tasting like everything else.

See staropramen/1664 🙁

The problem with Peroni is that it makes me Uber smashed for some reason, in a way no others do. Nice to drink but stupid expensive now...... and ruins me.

Slightly off topic, but isn’t Prosecco the new name for Asti Spumante? (In the same way that sardines are the new mackerel?). Couldn’t give it away when it was Asti Spumante.

Actually now you mention it, yes it probably is. But you wouldn't really want to buy something with 'spew' in the name I suppose!

More overpriced shite for the sheep to buy.

Schiehallion for the lager win.

Most of the 'mass' lagers taste the same to me. Was bought a selection box this week - Carlsberg Export, Staropramen, San Miguel and something else. All tasted pretty much the same to me. Pleasant enough on a hot evening but nothing distinctive.

In a sad hipster way, I'm more into the glut of heavy hopped IPAs that are everywhere right now.

And you can get Edlestoff, Fruh, Jever and Budvar to name a few for about the same money but far better.

I even prefer the Spanish Mahou Red (used to be 5.5% not the new austerity 5.1% version) or Polish Tyskie (UK prices have almost tripled from when it was first imported) to Peroni.

San Miguel is dogs piss and always has been!

Stella was always "reassuringly expensive" when it was 5.2%. Now it's weaker but still overpriced.

Lager prices are what made me start drinking ale. It's a quid cheaper in my local and there's usually a better selection.

Having said that, it's going to be a week of Super Bock in the sunshine this week.

Prosecco is not expensive, and tastes nowt like spumante.

Agree re schiehallion, Williams bros also do one called hipsway that is lovely. But if you think Carlsberg tastes anything like San Miguel senorita beater, your taste buds are goosed! 🤣

So, let’s recommend some decent bottled lagers then..

We hammered Peroni to death, let’s see what Welles is out there..

Estrella is a good call, so too Moretti.

I prefer bitter lagers, not the sickly sweet syrup the mass produced odour liquids seem to represent..

Isn't it UK Gov duty ABV rules that have caused the pishing of lager in the UK market?. A lot of what was fairly decent beer lager has been brewed to Gnats Pish for the UK market in order to get under duty thresholds. Amstel being a good example, 15 years ago it was a very decent 5%+ ABV continental beer (and probably still is in mainland Europe), now it's something like 4.1% ABV and nothing like I remember.

If we're talking about marketing triumphs of the booze world, Champagne has got to be top of the list. Made in an area where you can't get a decent wine from a single varietal, and it's too cool to complete the fermentation without it going fizzy, somehow they've sold two attributes you'd avoid if you could into some of the most valued.

Super Bock

Krombacher

Rothaus

Hogstar

Caesar Augustus (OK, it's a lager/IPA hybrid, but it's ace!)

Veltins

Mahou 5

Keo

GS Spaten

Warsteiner

Etc.

Life's too short to drink crap beer.

I agree, but why is Mahou on your list Captn?

I can't drink a pint of anything these days, but Pilsner Urquell was always my favourite tipple that wasn't bitter or Trappist. I accidentally ordered a pint ( well, half litre) of Peroni in a pizzeria in Spain and only managed about a third of it before the boak set in.

When we lived in Italy a couple of years ago we used to pay €1 for a 750ml bottle at the local supermarket.

It's massively overpriced here in the UK.

Like Peroni - Nastro Azzurro. For a mass produced beer it's very refreshing. Is it expensive because it's not brewed under license here/not quite as mass produced as some? Dunno.

Got to be from a bottle though, I always think beer in a can is awful.

Also I generally hate Prosecco, but it's a stupid thing to say as not all Prosecco is made equal.

Every time I wander into some micro-brewary or dad beer setuo and try some of the specialist beers - I think they're crap. My palate never developed in that regards.

You like what you like.

I can spanner in a Blackpool story here. I was in the Bierkeller with my mate a few years ago. I went to the bar to get a couple more of whatever German offering they had on. The lad next to me was looking up and down the taps when he collared the barman, " 'ere mate, 'ave you got owt normal!?" "Weve got Carling." "I'll have 22 pints of that."

Some people just don't give a shit what they drink so long as they've heard of it and it's cheap.

Duty is linear so the ABV cost goes up in a straight line . There is no threshold point at which i ramps up/down.

Peroni pay alot of people to mystery shop so bar staff can earn £20 for converting the " I will have a pint of Lager plaese" customer to a Peroni, served in a branded glass, logo forward.

They also incentivise all the way up the food chain .

It is allso the most expensive to buy in , approx £120 for 88 pints iirc , then x 3 plus vat for your tap price to cover your margin.

Peroni also offer alot of well branded POS , which all adds to its price point.
