Right in ones new gaff one has oodles of outside space (humble brag)

I've just knocked my old crap prefab garage down to make room for the uber s****y new garage.

But left over from pile of rubble and shite I have 2x 10ft steel pitch roof trusses that held the old roof together.

I'm contemplating making an outdoor seating area etc with them using 4" fence posts as uprights.

I'm wondering about having either a hammock or a patio swing chair.

Anyone built one any tips I'm looking at keeping it square so 10ft...

Any tips did you just cement in the posts or did you use fencing steels and then timber above ground. If I was using just tanalised timber how long do you reckon I'd get before it went mushy?

Cheers

Why not, have a go. If it’s not perfect you’ll learn.

I’d keep it simple: 4” tannalised posts postcreted in the ground. Should be good for 10 years. Relatively little effort, so if there’s an obvious problem you can refine it in a few years. Or never.
Could be an interesting structure with a bit of a story.

Or you could over analyse it and never do it.

Edit for typo and also to add: just take care getting the posts laid out square and plumb.

FWIW

A pagoda is a tiered tower with multiple eaves common to China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and other parts of Asia.

Only because it hasn't been built yet. The OP is a visionary.

It appears to be an outdoor seating area 10ft square but only 4in high, maybe to keep the snails dry or something?

Will it have a fully covered roof or a series of bars? Only cos it's more likely to be a gazebo than a pergola if it's got a full roof. Definitely doesn't sound like an arbour though.

I'm in the process of doing something fairly similar. 12' square deck covered with bitumen roofing sheets - will add walls to make some of it a shed at a later date.

10' x 4" fence posts, concreted in - mixing your own concrete is loads cheaper than postcrete. Top top: get a "post hole digger" from Wickes for £20 - makes digging 2' deep post holes a walk in the park.

I’ve been thinking of something similar. Have a gravel area with a table I made and a steel frame I bought a few yrs ago that holds a square sail shade which provides, er shade and also waterproofing for the table. This weekends may storms meant the sail filled up with water as it had stretched over the yrs and the weight bent the frame irreparably.

I fancy a pergola but with some rain cover. I don’t want a proper roof as the sun coming through a material sail shade gives a nice brightness. A fixed opaque roof would be too much.

Anyone done anything similar? WAs thinking of polycarbonate sheets on top but boxed in at the ends (with some sort of hidden gutter on one side) and hang some shade only sail shades underneath to give a bit of colour and shade/ disguise the roof sheets from below.

This thread is pertinent to my current interests.

Maybe worth getting on with it as apparently there are already shortages and higher prices of lots of building supplies/timber etc

We've been on the cusp of ordering the materials for a pergola for ages, but I had never considered the possibility of using the posts for a hammock.

Mind: blown

Oh yeah, I'm going to extend some of the roof timbers since the builder's merchants gave me 4.8s since they didn't have and 3.6s in stock and hang my hammock off them 😃

I considered polycarbonate sheets to let more sun in, but TBH I think they look pretty naff when new and will get covered in dirt and pretty quickly look even worse. Just my opinion of course. I couldn't think of a better solution, so I'm going to engineer a roof that partially folds to allow more weight in. I could end up regretting that, we'll see 😆

Anyone have any thoughts on this style of retractable roof?

I'm planning something similar for ours. Going to use tensioned wire as the runners and then some long, semi-flexible rod with loops on the end (maybe net curtain stuff?).
Run it slightly higher at one end than the other so that water runs off when it rains.
As you can tell from the description, it's still very much a basic concept in my head and I've not planned it properly yet!

I had ideas to do the same. Tilt the thing so water would run down the channels. Latest thinking is poly sheet on top with a sunshade 7nderneath so you can’t see the poly. Even some foliage over the beams to disguise the poly.

I do have the same concern about it looking naff though.

Above roof solution is genius. Way better than an old bedsheet held down with a couple of planks.

Are you sure about a hammock?

My back always found our hammock a kind of purgatory rivalled only by the deck chairs, whereas the swing seat was made in heaven.
