I work with a lot of young females (yeh I know it's tough, but it is wall to wall mid 20's females in here) and today one of them is wearing a perfume that smells like wd40 or GT85 (can't figure out which).

Now I thought that would be a good thing, turns out its not and its making me gag.

Perhaps one of them has been in the bike shed tinkering?

It's very odd, no point mentioning it because none of them will know what wd40/gt85 is.

Ah the one that sits nearside me has just returned to her desk, she's reapplied so I know who it is now and there's no way she could have got to the bike shed and back in that time.

Unsure if 'bike forum' applicable or not.

Has she forgotten her contact lenses and is trying to use said aerosol as an anti-perspirant/deodourant?

It's not perfume, it's lube. She's waiting for you.

It's not a co-incidence. She is wearing it to keep lecherous gits like you away

Bit harsh there! I see a flaw though, if she knows what GT85/WD40 is and she knows I like bikes then its possibly applied as an attractant.

Smells like it but do they keep that sort of stuff in ladies toilets?

Dammit! WD40 is not a lubricant! It's a water dispersal agent. Honestly, how many times...

GT85 might be ok though.

Th WD40 perfume is a very much cost-reduced version of Shalimar by Guerlain. I know because I work for the company that manufactures it for WD40. Shalimar probably has 60 different raw materials and a raw material cost of £100 a kilo whereas WD40 probably has 15 materials and a cost of £3.00 kg but there may be some materials or notes in common, which is what is triggering your memory.

Basically it's a sweet fruity powdery oriental.

WD40 actually has perfume in it? That would explain why I like the smell so much!

It stopped the hinge on my back gate from squeaking, so it much have some lubricating properties.

(and no, "back gate" is not a euphemism)

Pretty sure it claims to lubricate on the can.

Yes, you spray WD40 on stuff to un-jam it, says so on the tin. That's lubrication

Just to clarify: lots of hydrocarbon-based lubricants and solvents, especially those designed for DIY use, contain a strong perfume to reduce the odour. This is industrial perfume added at a dosage of about 0.5%, i.e. 5 grams of perfume per kilogram of product. Generally heavy fruity and vanillic or powdery smells are best at covering petroleum odours; we sell many tons of cheap bubblegum and blackcurrant smells to companies like Shell, Burmah Castrol, Elf and Esso in the Far East to improve the smell of the two-stroke oils that are sold as consumer products for all the motorcycles, the different brands have lots of advertising claiming greater purity and quality when in fact it's the perfume that makes the oil smell better than your competitor's oil.

You don't smell the perfume in the smoke, it gets burned in the combustion chamber. It's just there to make the product less smelly.

Interesting stuff.

So, given the common perfume in WD40 and Shalimar you have to assume that either she has never smelt WD40 before (mid 20's girl...maybe?), or she really is after Gary M 😉

Some background on Perfume Of The Week, here at Scent-ttackworld. WD40 invented in 1953 by Norm Larsen in the US of A,it was his 40th go at getting it right! = Water Displacement 40!, couple of "Oh Matron" snippets,it was developed to prevent corrosion on Atlas missiles (should work on yours then...)and it was designed as a penetrating oil too!. Fnarr Fnarr. 🙂

WD40 does lubricate- it contains mineral oil. And the solvent isn't that dissimiliar from paraffin, which is a good penetrator/unseizer. But fluid displacement isn't really what you want for this job.

Tommy Girl smells a lot like petrol, an ex of mine loved it.

Years and years ago I worked in a factory that produced Nail Polish remover. Basically it was Acetone with blue dye added. I loved that job, but looking back it's only because I was off my tits the entire time. 😯
