Quick rant.
Is there a more reliable tell of a selfish person? I have two neighbours - one opposite whos van sounds the horn every time he locks it and one a couple of doors down where the unlock sound it basically the alarm sounding full volume for a couple of blasts.
What might make someone choose those settings and not thing about anyone else?
If the van is a transit custom the door loom has probably gone. Common fault, horn sounds to let you know the door is open.
Might not be choice. A couple of Fords I’ve had chirp the horn if they sensed a door not quite shut. My old car alarm used to make an annoying sound until it thankfully broke.
MrsMC sometimes gets 1 Series Beemers as hire cars for work, I have to apologise to the neighbours for it's stupid chirping. As well as listen to her telling me how much she dislikes 1 Series Beemers
My son's Suzuki Swift has a beep, relatively quiet, not horn, but we cannot find a way to turn it off. It's frustrating.
Also, some older Transits beep when you double lock them, or to tell you one door isn't locked. If the lock motor goes or wiring breaks, it will sound every time.
Pretty much every hire car I've had has done this. Google is almost my first task after picking them up
My Ford doesn’t do anything like that, there’s a click and the lights come on, and that’s it. Maybe there’s a setting for it somewhere, but it’s never made any significant noise as long as I’ve had it. It’s a Fiesta-based EcoSport.
I thought it was illegal to sound the horn on a stationary vehicle full stop. How can the manufacturers homologate a car that automatically breaks the law?
Annoying, without a doubt, but do you know that they chose these settings? Perhaps they are unaware that it is even a setting.
I’ve set my alarm so it chirps when locking and unlocking . If someone wants to try to steal it using the relay method , at least I’ll get a warning. Don’t really come home late or leave early in the morning , so not worried about what neighbours may think on the odd occasion I do.
Don't most cars do that now by default? Mine certainly done it from new and I'm not aware of a method to switch it off.

My car beeps and it drives me mad. I have tried switching it off in the settings and it occasionally decides to comply. Then it will beep again. Absolutely no rhyme or reason to it, other than it always beeps when I get home from dropping my daughter off at work at 6.30am on Sunday mornings. And if I don't lock the car (to avoid the beep), I'll be back in bed and the bloody app will beep at me to remind me to lock the bloody car.
Don't have the option to turn mine off - the car also locks itself after a while if I leave it parked up & ignition off so there's no escape.
If, as most of the drivers in these parts are, you're blind one needs an auditory confirmation that the locking has worked.

Beeps yes (but even then they are rare), horn nope!
Ha! Just looking at the Forum , the thread below this one is "Recommend me a Frying Pan". Which I guess would be a suitable Vic & Bob / Mayall/Edmonson style punishment.

A 2021 Dacia Duster. The horn toots twice as I walk away from it. I've searched and there is no way of turning it off as far as I can find. It's the only irritating thing about the car - the rest of it is very adequate!
Lots of VW group do a loud chirp or double chirp when you lock them. My old car, new van thing and MrsF's car just flash lights.
Feel like I'm going mad. I don't think I've ever heard a car do this!
I've heard a couple do that quick 'pyip pyip' sound, which seems reasonable enough. (as per fossy's post above) I even live opposite a primary school so we have loads of cars park outside twice every day!

Have had cars with a mini toot of the horn and ones with a digital chirp. Current car i can switch it on or off (can switch the light flash and the mirror fold on and off too) Think that's been a thing on Volvos for about 15 years (since Sensus at least).

Biggest issue is those markets that have time or light level based religious restrictions on *any* noise, but also have requirements to audibly notify alarm activation as well... That's causing some concerns!

On the Jogger it can be turned off in the infotainment system, might be the same on the Duster?

Mine's an Alfa - the alarm "beeps" once when you lock it & twice when unlocking.
Seems to be a thing across what was FCA Group (now Stellantis) cars in recent years. Mercs all seem to do the horn thing as standard now & there seems to be more & more joining the party.
