It would appear nose ring clad, non wetsuit (tough) man didn't like me today or the fact I've travelled from one of the most middle parts of England for that matter. A lovely day was somewhat marred by the fact I was told I should "spend less time ****ing about with that (gopro, I know) and more time watching the waves" when I accidentally bumped in to him in a sea that resembled a wave pool in benidorm. I asked him "or what" which further raged him and when asking him if he owned this part of the sea he lost it and ****ed off. I'm sorry us middle England folk come down and spoil the seaside so often, but we probably do help things a bit too.

I'm confused.

Why does it matter about the wetsuit?

How did he know where you'd come from?

Is he a Dead President?

Chill dude.

There'll be no accusations, just friendly crustaceans, under the sea.

It was a sunny bank holiday ssturday so it was rather busy and I was just getting a few clips of the daughter bodyboarding. Thing is I just got pushed in by the wave where they were breaking in his general direction so there wasn't a lot i could do. I did put my hand up and start to say sorry but he just went off at me. As I say it was in the flagged bit so you were getting bumped in to all the time,

The lifeguards corral everyone into a small section of beach so they can sit back and watch the grockles fighting...

I don't like it when people don't look where they are going and walk into me..... but they usually say sorry or excuse me and then that's that.

Hostilities are avoided 🙂

"Maybe you *should* have spent more time watching the waves instead of **** about with your GoPro?"
Could not agree more.
The sea is dangerous enough without people concentrating on little boxes on a stick rather than their surroundings.

If you don't like confrontation while your'e in the sea, don't go surfing at Saltburn.
Well not next to the pier anyway, at high water when there's anglers chucking 6oz sinkers about.

Don’t forget - you may have not been the first tourist to have done that to him on the day.

Maybe he was minding his own business and someone who wasn't paying attention got a bit to close to him or his loved ones. So he moved. Then it happened again.
Maybe the person not paying attention was so wrapped up in what they were doing they didn't realise they were being annoying and irritating to the people trying to share the same space.
Then the inevitable happen and there was conflict.

Maybe this could have been avoided.
But then we wouldn't have the joy of this thread.

As I read it..

Op makes an error of judgement with regard to a wave, quite possibly because increased by or at least the result of the error was increased by the concentrating on a gopro.
Man take umbrage to being bumped into. Expresses himself admittedly in not the best way, but it was the OP's fault.
The OP, despite being in the wrong, rather than defuse the situation with a "sorry" or "sorry, the wave caught me by surprise" responds with "Or what!?!".

Now I fully get that the guy was rude and that you did not intend to bump into him but you did. It may not even be 100% your fault as the wave caught you off guard but you did make an error that contributed to the bump and rather than admit it challenged the guy to a fight. The guy was being a dick, but you out dicked him.

Im more amused that the OP classes you as a tough guy if you dont wear a wetsuit in the sea (im assuming none of the parties here were surfing of course).
Just looked at Peranporth beach and its bloody rammed, so looking for somewhere esle to go for a swim

Bad enough having phone zombies as part of life now ! Let alone a go Pro goon in the sea
You come across as one of those people who stands behind his mates on a night out threatening other people .
All you needed to do was apologies for YOUR error and he would most likely of accepted and moved on after quite rightly calling you a dick

Did no one read the OP's second post where he said he started to apologise but the guy just went off on one....

Admittedly the "or what" probably wasn't called for, I'd have just ignored him or laughed and turned away.

I was sitting peacefully on a beach this afternoon, enjoying a quiet read, nobody for about 100 metres either side. Some people came along and plonked themselves maybe 10 metres from me at most. This is on a long straight beach, no bit being noticeably better than any other (apart from my apparently magnetic presence).

AIBU or is that the act of an utter psychopath?

Surf nazis have been around for decades, seems like this bloke was trying to behave like one, or like the berk at the bar, who gets mouthy because another customer gets nudged into his arm by a third party.
This was nobody’s fault, it was a pure accident caused by a natural phenomenon, a wave on a beach, and some jackass gets all bent out of shape about it. Only one person in the wrong here.

Been in again today, with my own 6 year old wetsuit and body board, all my own and not hired, had to buy the kids new wetsuits this year though as they keep growing. No shouty man thankfully but far less waves so he probably didn't deem it a good day for tourist bashing..

As for apologising , I did genuinely try, but **** him, anybody having a pop that quick deserves a full on **** off tablet. He probably, by the look of him doesn't get it that often, but I'm a bit like the bloke from the intolerant hot tub post these days.
I love meeting nice people on me holidays, like the chap I bothered tonight who was taking awesome long exposure pictures of the waves at dusk, but people like the guy I bumped in to, yes me, my fault, I'll front them up all day long!

Tdog, stop it, you're making me blush. You seem to not like me for some reason as you've been pretty hostile on some other posts. Anyway I'm not sure what a door mat is supposed to be or what I've been polluting by being here, as for surf etiquette we're talking swimming and body boarding here, your brother will tell you if you're not sure, it's the busy bit in between the flags where we try and stay so as not to make the lifeguards job any harder. I didn't jump on some bodies big wave at nazaré as they were flying in. I'll keep an eye out for your brother though.

The chips are ok.
I don't surf, I chuck 6oz leads into the sea. 🙂

Be careful in Goa as well. I once saw a lifeguard give a bloke a right smack cos he was on the wrong side of the red flag & kept ignoring the guards instruction to move, so he waded out & bopped him!

5 stars and 5’-7’ here (Laga, Basque Country) tomorrow according to MSW app. I shall be paddling out and trying not to get in anyone’s way.. The locals surf by the rocks and and are more than welcome to it.

Surfers are about as friendly as road cyclists around here.

And still they blurt on about surfers
Does nobody actually read the full thread (or even the opening statement) anymore before commenting.
Although it wouldnt be an STW thread without at least 30% of posters getting their arse in their hand about an entity that didnt exist at the start
(i.e NO SURFERS WERE INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT)
🤣
