John Kelly going for the record (again) trying to beat 61h 35mins. Set off at 9am and currently just at Hadrian's Wall.

Nuts!

John's an interesting chap. An American who I think is currently resident in the UK, he's the last person to have completed a Berkley Marathon. He also did the big three rounds (Paddy Buckley, Bob Graham and Charlie Ramsay) and biked between them! Apparently his average speed on the bike was 16mph!

I took this shot of him on his previous record run.

john kelly

Despite looking 16 he's in his mid 30s and has three or four kids.

I met John when I sat next to him at the Bob Graham award dinner a few years ago. I had no idea who he was at first and was pleased Id done a faster round. It was 15 mins into the conversation when he revealed hed done the Paddy Buckley the day before and cycled to the lakes 🤣

Bumpity bump. Still ahead of the current record splits. Will have a wander over to Marsden or Wessenden tomorrow to shout him on.

Cool story DJG 😁

Am I reading it right and he's currently 15km ahead of target?

Not sure about distance, but he's almost 3hrs up on schedule. Quite how far ahead of Damien Hall's current record that schedule is/was is another unknown (to me).

Quite fast going now for a while with just the ascents of PenyGhent and Fountains Fell as interruptions over the next nine hours or so. Then there's another pull up onto Pinhaw just south of Skipton.

Just watched him come through Charlestown, 2Hrs45 ahead of schedule. He's tired ( 🤣) but otherwise good physically. Incredible, hope he can keep it up for the next 40 miles..

Dude’s pretty baked unsurprisingly. Tough conditions right now too. Here he is having a pit stop (rice pudding)at the top of Wessenden before the last three challenges of Black Hill, Bleaklow and Kinder.

Almost done it! Just coming over Kinder now. What an effort

Was just thinking: he's just got the Kinder plateau and the descent down to Edale to do. Then realised that dropping down Jacob's Ladder with 400km in your legs might not be so pleasant!

Hard enough on a full susser with 5 miles in your legs. Jacobs gonna hurt!! Will be nice to finish in daylight and Nags Head should be open!!

Looks like he'll take 3 hours out of the current record. I'm glad he's using his superpowers for good and not evil.

Bouncing dot!

58hrs 4mins 49secs

Chuffin' Nora! Well done that man.

Edit: I mentioned in an earlier post that he completed the Barkley Marathon, just checked on Wikipedia and he took longer for that than the Pennine Way.

It’s impressive what some humans can achieve. I’d like a vid of him shambling in.

With luck on his side he was always going to reclaim the record considering he set the 2020 time with a bleeding stomach ulcer, vomiting most of what he was eating. Didn't expect that margin though!

Bloody fool, if he’d went the other way he’d have got a free half pint at the finish line 😂
