I've just had my mum on the phone. She's received a penalty fare notice for non-payment of a fine for travelling on the train without a ticket. So far so normal except her name isn't Daniel Hussain and she hasn't been on a train since she left school.
WWSTWD? It's clearly someone giving a false address, but is it worth taking the time to try and appeal it, return to sender "not known at this address," or just bin it?
For added "huh?" she got something equally sporadic a couple of months back. Non-payment of a spot fine for dropping a cigarette butt at the train station, when she doesn't smoke and again hasn't been there in years. Addressee was another Asian-sounding male name but different from the one above. Coincidence or something more concerning?
That one was easily resolved, she rang the local council and they dropped it, but this new one says they'll only accept appeals by post.
If she's up for the Lulz then ring and say, "It's this or make fools of yourselves in court. Your choice matey."
I would appeal it. They are quite understanding once they realise they have got it wrong.
The phone number is an automated payment thing, I don't think you can actually speak to someone on it.
Ask to speak to the complaints dept. They then have to follow it through to the end and inform you of the outcome. You can then refer it if you aren't happy with their decision.

Tell her she's going to get done for tampering with mail. 🙂
It's not addressed to her, so her name won't be on any follow-up action such as a summons. The simplest thing is to write 'not known at this address' on it and lob it back in the postbox.
I’d ignore it personally.
She should hire a well armed, private detective to track the offender down, no matter what shady, unlit corner he’s hiding in..
Might be overkill though.....
A gun for hire, even if it’s just Dan Hussain in the dark.
Back in the post "not known at this address"
Tell her she’s going to get done for tampering with mail.
I did suggest that next time she shouldn't open it. But the way it was folded, the name wasn't visible through the little window in the envelope.
Ask to speak to the complaints dept.
Would they cover this sort of thing?
In any case, it's not really Northern Rail's fault if someone's given them false details. Though it is their fault that I can't easily ring the relevant department I suppose.
Lols at perchy

Genius.

‘RTS. Not known at this address. Please remove from database’
They should do as the person who gives the notice should have asked for proof of id. They wouldn't let our daughter of the station until she had. They are good at making it up as they go along.
Either they didn't follow their procedure or worst case is someone is using your moms address on fake id.
