It's not (unlike Zwift, etc) actually aimed at cyclists, so I'm not surprised I don't know anyone who uses it!

also there's a paywall for that article so you've just revealed your filthy capitalist credentials 🧐 🎩

who is valuing it? Them? 😂

Wife wanted to get one to replace our turbo and Sufferfest set up. I work away so she wants a more fixed solution.
Did quite a bit of reading on it over my holiday, decided it’s not for me.
Price wise, it doesn’t compete with a Watt Bike Atom. Also for a genuine cyclist, I don’t think constant HIIT sessions is ideal. We’ve plumped for the watt bike and remaining on Sufferfest.

Great business model, who's going to cancel a subscription on something they've paid £2k for the hardware? And probably on finance too so the cancelable sub is only a fraction of the cost!

But as alluded to, the cheapest road bike plus a Wahoo kickr and zwift/TR/SF sub is going to be less than half the price, despite being probably the most expensive way to get a home training setup!

In the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019, Peloton reported sales grew 110% to $915 million from $435 million in fiscal 2018. Meanwhile, its 2019 net loss widened to $245.7 million, from a net loss of $47.9 million in the prior year.

Hmm, so another tech 'disruptor' pipedream that makes loss after loss but investors still seem to be unable to get enough of (see also Uber, Spotify, Tesla etc. etc.)..

Great business model

Really? For whom? The people about to sell their shares for more then they are worth maybe:

In the fiscal year ended June 30, 2019, Peloton reported sales grew 110% to $915 million from $435 million in fiscal 2018. Meanwhile, its 2019 net loss widened to $245.7 million, from a net loss of $47.9 million in the prior year.

I won't be investing.

Had the plumber in to service my boiler last week, he knows I'm into cycling and mentioned he'd got himself setup with the Peloton stuff. I know a lot of people slag it off here (and the mocking Twitter account is funny) but he seemed to really like it. Of course I was also thinking in the back of my mind how much do plumbers earn but to be fair he's done well for himself and runs a team of plumbers now with several vans etc.

Cost and cheesy adverts aside for a non-serious cyclist (i.e. not serious enough to care about measuring and training to power) and not wanting the hassle of getting a smart trainer + Zwift all working I can see it's a pretty decent home training/fitness option that's probably a bit less prone to becoming a clothes-horse than something like a treadmill or C2 ergo.

Great business model
it's actually a ****ing terrible business model, as you will realise when they go bust 😂

A company like that needs sustained growth i.e. new customers. Just having old customers renew their subscriptions is not enough. Have you never even watched Dragon's Den? 😂😂

I used it for awhile, with my turbo trainer. So the app only - not with their custom stationary bike.

If you like spinning classes (I do), it's pretty good. Better than any of the local gym spinning classes I've done, with the exception of the (kind of competitor to) Flywheel classes I did in NYC.

I eventually dropped it because I was focusing more on structured training. But I do see the value - if you are a spinning class aficionado as opposed to a cyclist, it's priced competitively to the spinning studios that are popping up in all the trendy cities.

Peloton reveals widening losses in filing for IPO see https://www.hl.co.uk/news/2019/8/28/peloton-reveals-widening-losses-in-filing-for-ipo

Shares will be type A - ordinary punters and Type B - worth 20 votes for directors.
Fail to see how they lose money unless its creative accounting.

The company said it had collectively sold 577,000 indoor bicycles and treadmills since they were introduced in 2014 and 2018, respectively. It also counts 102,000 subscribers for its digital offering, which costs $19.49 a month.

And still can't turn a profit! I'm out.

I am however about to buy a new modern fangled power controlling turbo and enter the world of Zwift, which seems like a better investment.

More than doubled sales in the last year to me points that the losses are mostly in marketing themselves.

A company like that needs sustained growth i.e. new customers. Just having old customers renew their subscriptions is not enough.

Not convinced. Once you have them they're stuck as they've bought the bike so there's not much of a cost to retain them. All the prerecorded instructor stuff has been paid for so there's only the live ones left. Development costs on the bike and app are done. Sales might drop at some point once the market for the bikes is saturated and then it's just subs.

Book's smart bike is similarly tied into the bkool software (Its only really got erg mode so can't see how it can integrate with zwift).

They seem to be spending on marketing/ gaining market share while contending with high rents as based in New York (need studio space for new content and live instruction). Also have significant costs associated with music licensing.
