Anyone recall that shout from footie matches waaaaay back when?
St James' Park in Newcastle - not Exeter - bloke in white coat (think lab technician), wicker basket full of bags of peanuts walking around the pitch perimeter calling out.
If you were upto about 15 yards back in the crowd (standing in Gallowgate or Leazes ends)....here, one arm in the air, throw a tanner (or more) at him,he catches - don't talk to me about reflexes - and in return a bag of nuts comes flying your way.
In truth, not a bag but a handful of peanuts in a white paper wrap.
Outright purchase only - no PCP, HP, contract hire, balloon payment nonsense.
Umm..what is a tanner?!?
1/2 a shilling or 6d
2 1/2 pence in funny modern currecy
Did you sweep them up from the main stage from...you know...the other matter?
Thanks TJ.
Apey - as for the 'other matter' I cannot comment other than 'no'.
Shermer, would you be even more (pretend) baffled if I referred to ' thruppeny' (three penny) bits - and it's not rhyming slang.
How about.....ha'pennies, farthings, florins, half crowns - I have all of these and the ^^^^thrupenny bits.
I don't have any groats or widow's mites - as far as I know..........
Do not remember peanuts at St James as I was not allowed to go. I do remember little bags of corn to feed the Pigeons though.
Nope but I do remember buying bags of monkey nuts that cost
sixpence.
The day the money changed I went in to the bike shop
in Guildford for something and they gave me a pub ashtray full of
threpenny bit's and tanners! They said something like "they are no use
any more". I went straight to the sweetie shop and bought loads of
sweets.
nah, way before my time, only made my first visit in the 2000's Uefa Cup runs making flat out trips from west cumbria in the evenings. Seating in the Platinum club as all the tickets were the same price, nice to have a cushion.
But I do remember when you used to be able to see most of the pitch from the top of the multi story car park
Mike - you're just a lad and get you with a cushion........
sit in the back of the east stand now when I come back over so not that fancy
