Helping some friends fell a big tree or three soon. A chainsaw will be there, but the plan is to keep it in fairly big lumps before sharing around as firewood to season.
So, am after something big enough to split some hefty trunk pieces, and then chop in to fire sized logs.
I have Mole Country Stores, and the usual Wickes, Bunnings etc nearby. Don't need anything artisan, just good functional kit.
Also, what beard oil? 🙂

I split 5-10 tons a year using one of those ^
Dont buy an "Axe".
And your downy bumfluff does not count as a beard.
Friskars x25.
meh, that's a posh maul.
Although now you come to mention it, this is for Flashy. Posh is good.
Im just worried about him around anything with a sharp edge.
I split considerably more than Stoner
FIGHT!
1957 Les Paul Goldtop.

What the **** is that??

Charred human remains. What's your point?
I'm not buying that; that's Ariel.
A log grenade with sledge hammer is good fun for initial splits.
You do realise that CFH won't actually be doing any splitting, he'll just attend and watch his 'man' do the work....
Whatever you buy, make sure it’s got a decent wood handle, none of that nasty plastic crap! Wood absorbs shock better, and will last for donks properly looked after, ie given an oiling with boiled linseed oil every so often, just to stop it drying out over time. Oh, and a bastard file and a good fine file to touch the edge up, with maybe a fine diamond stone as well. It needs a good working edge, not one fine enough to shave with, that’ll lose its edge very quickly, and be a bugger to keep up.
Something like this Bahco ought to do the trick, and it’s not stupidly expensive:

(EDIT: Seriously? Recommend me an axe?)
Fiskers x25. ignore Countzero. Or chop him up. you decide
Whatever you buy, make sure it is Swedish made, like a Hultafors or a Grantfors Bruks

There's some nice options above ^ but not cheap.
Or just get a 6 or 8lb roughneck maul from screwfix and be done with it. Is this the path to full woodsman, or a one-off bit of splitting?
Peak STW?? More like repeat STW!!!
I've asked this, he's asked this, we've all asked this!!
General answer varies between Fiskars X25 (which I got - lovely bit of kit) to 'artisan wood handled buxom virgin crafted axe', to ' a slightly pointy lump of ore thrown at the logs'...
Take your pick! (Boom boom)

Which is still £35 and nearly three times as heavy as something which performs ten times better. Too bad if you can't spend another £15 on something that'll do the job quicker, with less effort and pain to your joints and which is infinitely tuneable, customiseable and recyclable.
It's worth remembering that fiberglass handled mauls break too - the resin holding the handle on cracks after a while leaving you with more plastic for the landfill and a lump of steel that doesn't conform to traditional axe handle patterns (and is worthless anyway).
