Hypothetically, if a person were to ride walk a bike dog along Dukes Road and rather than head south for Derwent Edge via Back Tor, was to continue west loosely following Abbey Brook...
Do we think the erm, dog would enjoy it's walk? Or would there be aspects which would involve carrying or lifting the dog along the route?

I presume it's the BW from the NE... over Hobson Moor etc
I've done the one westish from just south of Back Tor that ends up on Abbey Bank. It was very nice ( gotta be dry though)

What day of the week are you walking the dog?
It used to be quite a good dog walk in an old school xc big day out kinda way. I recall it being quite a narrow and deep rut though, with a big drop to one side, so the owner would have to be quite sure footed.
I heard a rumour it had been turned into a quad bike track for the shooting types, and haven’t been back to walk the dog down it in a good few years.
Sorry, yes. By Dukes Road, I mean the BW that runs west from Smallfield over Hobson Moss. From there, it's heads SW towards Back Tor.
I recognise the second picture. My dog and I had a splendid time on that walk. Path from just south of Back Tor via Green Stiches and down to Walkers Clough if I'm not mistaken.
I was considering turning left at the point where Dukes Road is no longer a BW. On the 1:25k OS map, it's says 'High Peak' and then heading generally west passed Cartledge Bents and Howden Dean.
Google Earth certainly makes it look like there's a bit of a drop to the side in places and also backs up the quad bike thing. The bottom ~half looks like a fairly wide track. Big day out, old school XC is never a bad thing.
Probably best considered on a weekday but I've had some fairly good walks at the weekend by starting early so who knows

If was basically as JonEdwards describes. And for a man who doesn't really like ruts or being in the edge of steep stuff, it wasn't great.
10/10 for scenery though. It would make a great walk but not so much when you're pushing a dog along a 12" wide ribbon of mud that's slowly falling into the valley below.
And to compound things, possibly Karma but I picked up a puncture on the bead which didn't seal properly.
Still, beats sitting around watching telly in my pants all day!
