We are heading up to Buxton for 3 days and I am looking at walks. We have done Kinder Scout, Mam Tor and a few smaller ones in and around Edale, we both love the area.
I have had a quick glance at the OS map, is Stanage Edge worth a visit? Or any other worth looking at?
We are both fit and active, anything up to around 9 or 10 miles....
Plenty to be had along the edges, recently re-done one from Baslow, up to Baslow Edge then along to end of Froggat and back along the valley and river, that was around 9 miles. Stanage is good too, depending on when you go the edges will be busy.
We are planning on doing a long walk on Tuesday, so hopefully it wont be too busy.
Thanks for that, the edges do look very nice, looking at google images.
Loads of stuff around the Buxton area, I wouldn't bother driving over to Stanage etc. Along with the obvious ones, check out Parkhouse Hill and Chrome Hill for mad dragon's back style walking. You can do a nice loop taking in Chinley Churn by Cracken Edge and back via Mount Famine, South Head. The Edale Skyline is a nice day out. And the northern edges of Kinder are spectacular and much, much quieter than the popular Downfall side. You can start from Hayfield, walk out along the northern edge via William Clough then cross the plateau where it narrows near Edale / Ringing Roger and come back on the popular side, drop off down from Kinder Low or carry on round via the Downfall.
Alport Castles near Ladybower is spectacular and quite tucked away. Worth a visit if you can be bothered.
Also, more local to Buxton, the edge that runs north above Dove Holes is quiet and very cool. There's loads more, nice moorland walking above the Errwood reservoir that you can reach directly starting from Buxton. Good for riding too 🙂
All the Edges are nice Bamford,Stanage,Froggatt, Calver and White Edge.... Personally I would do the Dove Dale walk as its closer to Buxton.... You can do it either way but I prefer to do it from the Dove Dale car Park upto Millers Dale then you can have Slice of cake and Tea at the cafe then walk back to the car. Also its worth a look at Lathkill Dale too ( my personal fav) do it from the Monyash end and there's a lovely Cafe at Over Hadon.. Garden tea rooms I think.
What Badly Wired Dog says. Parkhouse and Chrome Hills are stunning. Also you could walk the Goyt from your door. 3 Shires head is worth a look, as is the Roaches and Hen Cloud. Or there’s more White Peaky limestone dales stuff heading towards Chelmorton and Monyash.
The Eastern Edges are great (it’s my local), but there’s plenty of lovely walking closer to you.
Stanage, Froggatt, Bamford plus Eyam for tea and cakes (always read the chalkboard for a titter). Great walk along Ravensdale (park nr 3 Stags head). Red Lion in Litton is worth a check. A little walk up Stoney Middleton would be rewarding if any climbing is going on (rare it seems these days) and do a bit of bouldering. All these places can be linked.
check out Parkhouse Hill and Chrome Hill for mad dragon’s back style walking.
From Buxton, Cheedale is on the doorstep walk through to Cressbrook or Monsal Head.
Lathkill Dale, The Roaches, The Goyt Valley. I can’t think of a direction you can go wrong (Ok Dove Holes or Harper Hill might not be at the top of my list)
