Interesting article in the Guardian/ Observer about a guy who is pushing for the right to roam and has written a book about peaceful trespass, makes you realise how ridiculous the whole "You're not allowed to ride here" thing is when the general public have so little access to most of the land in England and Wales at all.

Yes, there have been a few articles recently about this. I used to be really good about only riding bridleways, but now I'm beginning to think screw it and riding more cheeky stuff lately. Primarily driven by lockdown as there are loads more footpaths than bridleways or BOATs round here. Also when you look at the rules in Scotland it makes a mockery of England.

I like to stick to Rule #1 and try not to be a dick. So no charging around at silly speeds and generally avoiding busy parts of the day.

Absolutely the same here. Genuinely used to feel guilty about riding footpaths!

Now, I don't break rule number 1 but consider them just as viable as the bridleways etc I usually ride.

I always make a point of giving a jolly hello, have a timber bell fitted and not had an issue with anyone yet.

I too began this approach during the last few months.

Haha snap, I've got a Timber bell as well. Most useful bike upgrade I've bought in the last six months 🙂

Yep - totally agree - I'll be well dead by the time we in England get some kind of RTR access - so I'm happy riding non honey pot footpaths - don't break rule #1, use a bell, stop or at least slow down for walkers and be polite - never have an issue.

Strava and endomondo (remember that?) have been around long enough now to give data to upgrade Most of the footpaths In the country I would’ve thought. But we all carry on as we were.

I’ve been riding on footpaths local to me for most of my life with no problems at all. Courtesy does go a long way.

However, post lockdown, there are a lot of footpaths now sporting “Kent County Council” No Cycling signs around our way.

I don’t know if these are legit (I suspect not in some of the places) but it’s only going to cause conflict between cyclists and other footpath users who will no doubt now feel emboldened by the “official” signage.

I think the noise is so happy/emasculatiing that it's hard for anyone you pass to get angry!😁

Yep, great little gizmos and im a definite convert.
