Help, indeed.

The last few days have had my connection dropping out for no apparent reason. The only change is that I have wirelessly joined the network with a net-top thingy using a usb dongle

I can connect to the router using router login, so the issue I assume is between my Router and the Cable Modem? or from Virgin? Would that be right?

ALSO

Is windows 7 gash? It certainly seems slow

Can I install XP on the net top thingy?

Limited knowledge of computer stuff, so please be gentle

That is all!

Thanks

x

Wireless networks can be a right pain in the backside to sort out and there could be a whole host of things affecting your connection. Without physically messing about with your network settings it's hard to know what's up but you could try changing the encryption used to a different type i.e. WEP to WPA2 as that can cause issues for unknown reasons with different devices. If that has no effect then try using Windows wireless manager to connect to the network rather than any third party software that you may be using. If that doesn't work then I'd say try another dongle if you can get your hands on one!

Also, Windows 7 isn't gash on the whole...netbooks however are pretty gash as they're meant to browse the net and not do a whole lot else. IMHO, XP would probably run just as slow and you may struggle getting XP compatible drivers for all the hardware inside your netbook.

Best thing to do is put some more RAM in it as it's a cheap upgrade but it's very effective and you're sure to notice the difference. If you let me know which make/model netbook you have, I can give you some links to compatible RAM to buy and instructions on how to install it (5 minute job).

Sorry, should be more specific. The net top is a packard bell rebranded acer revo. Basically a netbooks innards but connected to a tv via hdmi.

I'm losing the connection to all my laptops/pc/iPhone and just wondering if the new pc has caused it. Or just a coincidence.

Maybe...I'd say try changing the network encryption type first in the router settings and then try putting the new password in on all of your devices. My iPhone is very fussy and needs the settings entering manually once then it will connect but it won't get them automatically through DCHP as it should 😐

Let me know how you get on.
