Hi all

My gaming PC is a couple of years old now and I'm thinking of upgrading the graphics card. Right now I have a GTX660 TI fitted but I'm looking at upgrading to a 780. The PC is hooked up to a large HD plasma TV, so I'd like the best display possible on my budget. The rest of the system is mid-spec, with 8gb ram and an i5 3570K.

Should I go for the 780?

rocket jr has been eyeing up the 780 but the conclusion was that unless you want to play a few specific games at 2160p the 760 was perfectly OK

Like XTR vs XT

Or get another GTX660 running in SLi and I think it will be more powerful than the GTX780.

780 prolly overkill, due to be replaced with something less power hungry soon.

I have a 780 and it's ace, probably overkill but it will run pretty much any game at 1080p and 60fps with all other settings on ultra. I upgraded from a 670 and while going sli would be cheaper it would be more power hungry and hotter, plus not all game support it.

Best bang for buck would be a second 660 in SLI as long as your mobo and psu can handle it. 660 SLI is on par with 780

AMD 290/290X is another option. 660 sli would be great budget option if you have a psu (750W ish) and motherboard ready for it and can find a card. I run 680 sli and have no sli related problems at all these days. The sli drivers are much improved.

HD plasma is 1080p max I'm guessing, so not too taxing on you GPU. Well worth using MSI Afdterburner or similar to overclock you GPU as much as possible.

Also, if you haven't already, buy a SSD ... best upgrade ever 🙂

Yes SSD is by far the best upgrade, when I got mine in 2010 it was day and night difference!

The SLI option is out, I'd need a new motherboard and a new PSU to cope with it so the total cost of that plus another 660TI would outweigh it.

Not only that, but not all games support SLI.

Ok

Which games are you playing that you GPU is struggling with?

Not only that, but not all games support SLI.

Can't be that many unsupported games these days...

Generally any games that don't support sli don't need a good gpu.

If you're going to upgrade from a 660ti which is not a bad card, you really need something like a 290X/780 Ti to make it a decent difference.

If you want something better but not £400 then something like a MSI NV 770 (£232) or MSI AMD 290 (£300) (from Scan.co.uk) is probably a good shout. I'd stick to the main brands to make sure they have a decent cooler (MSI/ASUS/Gigabyte).
