Ok, I've installed windows 7 on an internal SSD (AHCI mode selected). Then plugged in another internal SATA HD with the intention of using this for data storage, etc. Although both drives are recognized and can be "seen" in the Device Manager, only the one drive, the SSD appears as the C: drive, with the other HD listed under the C: drive in "Hardware". There must be a way of separating these two drives and allocating separate drive letters, etc.?
I've trawled through the geek forums to no avail. Anyone understand the above and can assist me before I go bald!!

Is the disc formatted? Should be doable from device manager. Then assign a drive letter

Under device manager are there any yellow symbols next to the drive. ie exclamation or question mark?

To change drive letters do this:

Open the disk management app by pressing the Windows key and R. Then type diskmgmt.msc in the 'open:' box.

This will show your physical drives and the partitions on them. Right Click on the relevant drive and select change 'Drive Letter and Paths'.

Fairly self explanatory from there.

Hi All,
Thanks for the replies. Can't seem to format the disc from the device manager; there are no yellow symbols next to the drive (drive has been tested and all is ok). Under Disk Management the SSD appears as Disk 1 and the HDD second drive as Disk 0 - this has grey diagonal hatching across the "disc space bar" and is "unallocated". When I right click it only allows "New Simple Volume" and "Properties". Right clicking on the SSD will allow "Change Drive Letter and Paths". Not sure what to do next...!

When I right click it only allows "New Simple Volume"

Try selecting that - you need to have a volume assigned before you can format.

Bingo! Thanks aracer, that did the trick; I now have the two separate drives as required. Thanks everyone for the input - the power of the STW forum does it again!
