You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Last night I got 2 separate (smallish) payments into my PayPal account, both from the same person. They're bona fide - rather than clicking any links in the email I went straight to PayPal's website and checked there. I've contacted the person who sent the money to ask why they've sent it and where they got my address but no reply yet. My eBay account (the only thing linked to my PayPal account) is still working fine with no unexplained activity. Should I be concerned? Anything else I should check before refunding the payments?
I would not be doing any refunds.
I would contact PayPal and ask them to review it.
It could be some fantastic scam we haven't thought about. Let PayPal deal with it.
If they do nothing you have been discharged of your duty as you have notified them.
How much are the payments?
Total is 22 quid so not a lot. I started going through PayPal's resolution centre but as soon as you flag money received it just tells you to contact the sender. I've emailed their customer service team but they have a 24hour response time so I was wondering if STW could beat them to it.
I've used this number to contact them in the past: 0800 3587911
Ignore it. Most likely they meant to send it to someone else and got the email address wrong. Wait for them to realise and see what story they come up with.
I don't *think* there can be any risk to you if you 'refund' the payments.
Just leave it there and do nothing. Then you cant be the victim of some scam.
Most likely they meant to send it to someone else and got the email address wrong
Unlikely as it's a domain I own which only has 2 email addresses active on it, so not a gmail/outlook mistake.
it could be someone looking for an unmonitored account for future scam potential - contact paypal not the seller
I'm paranoid, so would also remove any accounts/cards linked with your paypal account until it is resolved to your satisfaction.
no expert just read these sort of threads to learn a bit - best guess (and is a guess) funds originate from stolen or cloned credit card - small amounts don't attract attention - small amount means you follow paypals' advice and refund - the originator now has "clean" money - credit card company ask paypal for refund and they reverse the original transaction - you are out of pocket ?? so I'd just leave it and monitor your account
