Anyone know if there's any protection when you opt to use paypal to checkout on websites?

Is it the same as when you pay by G & S?

I booked a week in Italy on Hotels.com in December for May, they are refusing to change the dates or refund because I got a lower rate becasue I paid up front, by paypal via debit card.

The hotel have bounced me back to hotels.com as (obviously) i booked through them.

My missus has lowered immune system so won't b wise to travel.

anyone know if I can claim my money back by paypal?

If it’s anything like booking.com you can choose 2 rates, the cheaper one is non-refundable. If that’s the case then it’s a travel insurance job. Nowt to do with PayPal as far as I can tell.

I think you’ve got the wrong end of the stick to be honest.

Just had a look at the site, when you go to book you have a choice between a lower rate with NO cancellation which must be paid immediately, or a higher rate which CAN be cancelled and can also be paid at a later date (with a deposit up front). You must’ve chosen the first option?

There's sometimes a cancellation fee for this sort of thing. £500 plus VAT rings a bell.

I'd like to know what law entitles you to a refund just because you changed your mind. Unless the holiday provider can't provide the service you bought from them or the government restricts it due the Corona Virus, you're S.O.O.L.

You've agreed to the terms of sale and now you want them to change?

Interesting

You had the option at time of booking to take the loss yourself if you cancelled. You selected that option in return for a lower room rate.
If you insured your car Third Party only because it was cheaper than Third Party Fire & Theft, would you expect your insurer to pay out if it caught fire?
Do you have holiday insurance?

...and how the sum of £500 somehow keeps cropping up!

I'd just wait. If you are unable to travel there because of local laws or advice preventing travel (I.e. they are unable to fulfil the service you paid for), then it should be refunded. At the moment, everywhere is on lockdown for a (short) defined period which will inevitably be extended.

Hold your nerve and worry about it closer to the time.

I agree with superficial. There is a chance the hotel will shut, in which case they should refund you. If you cancel then no refund. Failing that, travel insurance. The wife has some flights for a conference. The conference has been cancelled but she can't get a refund on the flight. If the flight is cancelled hopefully she'll get a refund. They have already offered a free transfer, though, but where do you book a flight to at the moment?
