How safe is receiving a gift on Paypal? Can people still do chargebacks? 1st time selling with this payment method.

Also how can I tell if its a gift or payment for goods it doesn't really say.

Until the money is in your bank account, assume the worst. It's a sad time when you can't trust ANYBODY.

If you want protection don't use 'gift', if you trust the buyer or it's a small enough amount not to worry then gift is fine. If the buyer insists on 'gift' and you aren't happy then either pay the fees yourself or walk away.

Chargeback only works on money paid from a card, not from paypal funds.

Not sure whether it's matters if it's a gift or not.

There was a good link on a thread of mine re. an online purchase a while ago.

1) Person sends you money
2) You move the money out of PayPal into your Halifax/Barclays/HSBC account.
3) Person does a charge back (as they paid via card to their PP account)
4) You end up with a negative PayPal balance - but the money is safe in your bank account.

It's a gift- chargeback is rare on gift, I think it can only be done in the event they make an Unauthorised claim, ie state they didn't send it.

But with all paypal transactions you need to offset the risk of complication against the ease of payment.
