No matter what STW can't (understandably) impose, but whenever I see an advert now that says "Paypal Gift", I just turn off.
Which, to me, makes sense. Nobody is telling me how to sell, or how to buy, but in MY head, Paypal 'gift' just sound ridiculous now. I actually found myself selling something very exp recently, and actively told the guy to pay by normal paypal, as in my head 'gift' now just seemed irresponsible.
That's it really, not that interesting, other than that self-regulation came to the fore, rather than imposed regulation.
every sale i have ever made on here, i have asked to be paid by pp gift.
some people are trustworthy, not everyone is a rip off merchant.
look at peoples history, buy from forum regulars, not from folk who only post on classifieds.
ask on the forum if people are trustworthy, some folk dont mind.
if people insist just offer to add the cost of the fees to your regular non gift transaction

if they are funny about it they are scammers and should be lynched
saying that ive done it for stwer regulars ive bought off
I couldn't care less how folk pay me for stuff tbh.
ask on the forum if people are trustworthy, some folk dont mind.
If they've nothing to hide, they won't mind you asking.
I'm with ton.....if ya don't like it you could offer to chip in a few quid for the fees....decent innit?
Ton, I'm not casting aspersions on anyone, and I try to view people in best light even allowing for reviewing history etc, but I'm just saying that I would respond to an advert where the 3.678293% charges were incorporated into the price, otherwise, I wouldn't.
Could be a cultural change that's just being impressed into me.
EDIT: My point is that is someone posts "PPG or bank transfer" then I'm out straight away, but if someone was to post a price and then say "or xxx if you're willing to pay by gift" then I'd be on-board.
some people are trustworthy,
even those who seek to avoid a legitmate charge by misrepresenting a transaction?
every sale i have ever made on here, i have asked to be paid by pp gift.
Whilst I think that's cheeky. 🙂
I never ask for gift. If the buyer trusts me, so be it. If not, fine. It gives them security.
Mostly if I see an advert insisting on it then I just click the 'back' button and ignore it.
I've bought and sold stuff on forums where the accepted norm is to state two values; one by cash, bank transfer or PPG - and another slightly higher one for PP.
pp, i do it so i can sell cheap.
if i post something for a tenner i want a tenner and the bloke pays a tenner.
i dont want to post it up for a tenner plus charges.
I'm with ton.....if ya don't like it you could offer to chip in a few quid for the fees....decent innit?
No. No it's not. YOU are the seller. YOU take the cash. It's your responsibility to describe and photo the item correctly and price it at a level you are happy with. If someone asked me to pay extra so they could avoid fees I'd refuse and back out of the sale. Do you want to sell it for £11.56 or NOT sell it for £12.00? You are the seller. That's your choice....
buyers market pp?
pp, i do it so i can sell cheap.
Assuming you mean PPG, yes that's fine and I get your logic if born out of being a genuine established seller that knows who they are, BUT surely now with STW in danger of becoming Scammer Traceless World, isn't it just better to charge £10.40p for the greater good?
bloke pays a tenner
You sexist swine 😀
You are the seller. That's your choice....
As is the decision to dissuade folk from using regular PayPal to reduce the risk of being scammed by a buyer.
It's only a matter of time before the tables turn and folk start losing goods and cash due to paypal's overt siding with the buyer.
People could send me money on a carrier pidgeon if they like, I'm very flexible.
As long as I receive the amount of money agreed in the sale I'm not fussed.
Like wise I always PayPal gift people as don't expect people to pay a fee for my convenience.
Just good manners ain't it.
and when i buy, i always offer pp gift.
Do you want to sell it for £11.56 or NOT sell it for £12.00? You are the seller. That's your choice....
I'd rather just have the £12 we agreed in the sale thanks. You can send me cash, come collect and give me cash, send me a cheque do what ever takes your fancy.
If you pay by PayPal though its instant and your stuff will be in the post the next day.
I offer PayPal gift or buyer pays fee on my fees. If am buying and don't know the person I'll insure myself against them and pay the fee. Most sales get discounted anyway if the buyer doesn't want to pay the agreed price by making me suffer a further discount then they are other buyers. If it still doesn't sell, on principle, I'll keep the item or give it away free to a mate.
even those who seek to avoid a legitmate charge by misrepresenting a transaction?
And can PayPal provide evidence that the percentage they add, plus the flat fee they also add is a legitimate charge?
Is that what is actually costs them to process the transaction, plus whatever else they are allowed?
Amazed by some of the reactions on both sides to this, why is it such an issue? Surely it's between buyer and seller use some common sense, it's not a shop, prices aren't set in stone negotiate and sort it between yourselves depending on the circumstances of the transaction, if not happy, walk away, there is Lways an LBS, or eBay etc
I've no problem either way, if it's a cheap item from someone with history then I will consider gift
If its more expensive (over £10) I'll stump up the fees, pay asking price / barter so to come to an agreement with seller where we both know what we are paying and receiving
I would hope for similar if I sell something
I would also however list something at more than my minimum expectations, I would expect to be haggled down, discussing fees etc is part of the haggling process.
The classifieds is like an online car boot, it's about banter and haggling, not like walking into a shop and paying the asking price, therefore PP gift shouldn't be an issue, people should be able to discuss and agree a price that takes into account the sellers expectations of any fees and postage costs etc
For example if I list something at £20 and someone offered £18 I would likely say fine but you pay fees, they end up paying around 18.80, I make sure I get proof of posting just in case, people are happy
PeterPoddy - MemberNo. No it's not. YOU are the seller. YOU take the cash
If you choose a method that incurs extra costs, why would you expect the other person to pay for it? I don't see it as any different to wanting a premium mail service- your service, your cost. And it is after all insurance against me ripping you off- I know I'm not going to do that so I'm not keen to pay for it!
I take a pretty straightforward approach personally... I buy and sell quite a lot of stuff, and I'd sooner be generally trusting of people and get ripped off very infrequently, than be distrusting. TBH I'm still ahead of the game, using free transfer methods has saved me more than it's lost me.
