Like many, I have a couple of old phones in my drawer that I don't use, may as well use one for a biking phone.
So, which SIM card can I buy that doesn't require me to spend a small fortune topping up every month when I'm rarely going to actually make a call?

I don't think they actually exist any more. I looked for one a while back, just for emergency once-a-year sort of calls, and came up empty.

Happy to be proved wrong, watching with interest.

Was in the vodafone the other day and heard them say unused credit carries over. Could be this one:

An MVNO for 2g phones or Three for smarter phones.

None of them go beyond 6 months if you do absolutely nothing:

But put a fiver on it, send a text every few months and it'll go on and on.

using three with the 321 tariff

here is something I found regarding payg inactivity.. I think as long as you make a chargeable activity within 6 months it is fine.

I've been on three for a couple of years. The 15 quid add-on is great when I'm traveling, a month of unlimited data and a bunch of texts and calls. Just going up to 20 quid actually, but still a far better deal than any other occasional internet solution. Tethering isn't officially allowed but it works for me.

3p/min for phoning is cheaper than my landline too. A lot.

Giffgaff are fine. No need to buy any goody bags, just top it up to start with. Then make a call or two every few months to keep it active.

GiffGaff. They use the O2 network and will cost you £5 for 3 months use last time I looked.
I use the £5 for the wife and the £7.5 monthly one for my business use.
