I like buying used stuff ..both for value and keeping things going . I also fix quite a lot of things which I enjoy and helps a minimal income.
We need another WM ...we have a fairly recent model but it's poor and unreliable.
People might point to miele I would think but due to weight ( I work solo ..billynomates) it might be a struggle to source. Any other suggestions /models to consider old or new ? I do like quality older stuff but economy may be an issue with energy prices . Older models must be fixable re spares etc .
Thanks in advance
PS I need to do a similar thread soon on fridge freezers so forive me !
Have a look on AO.com
Plenty of choice to achieve what you want
I've a free LG - needs a new tub as it cracked - in central Scotland. It's 6 years old and perfect, apart from the tub fail.
I'm currently runnin a pair of Beko 8Kg (Beko WTG841B2W_WH) machines - cost £229 in 2018 and they've been great since I've had them.
Some stuff I'm happy to buy used but I'm not so sure about washers.... Dunno.
We got our last one on a heavy discount (something like half price) as a new return in store at John Lewis. Only difference from an actual new one seemed to be some missing packaging. So might be worth popping in for a look if you have a store nearby.
We got a discount code a few days after registering on ao.com, then got one of these for £270 a couple of months ago. Only complaint is that it doesn't beep when finished so you forget to empty/reload it. It's night and day to our previous (10 yr old, 6kg) one, much bigger load & faster, it's undoubtedly saving us in electricity compared with the old one.

Bought a factory damaged one new. Painted the side panel boom done
With a used washing machine it'd have to be very cheap or Freecycle. They can be dicks. Especially after being moved.
thanks all . appreciate the advice ..keep it coming ! Out of interest ..is moving WM's really fault inducing ? Never had a problem myself that I remember but handy to know what to be careful of. I've actually got a few units working again over the years ...bad connections fixed by wiggling , replacing the main drum bearing + a few other simple fixes ( replaced solenoid etc )
the scottish LG unit in need of repair is appreciated but collecting from Devon is a little far with current fuel costs ...thanks anyway !
We bought a top loader a few years back where the drum has opens on the curved surface so the drum is supported by a bearing on both sides of it's spinning axis.
It's a Hotpoint iirc.
It doesn't shake anything like a front loader (I guess because the load isn't acting as a lever on the motor and bearing), it takes up less floor space (about 2/3 of a normal machine) but obviously doesn't fit under a worktop.
I’ve found Hoover machines easier to repair than some other manufacturers. Parts are readily available and the drum bearings on the models I have worked on have been easy to replace without unobtainable seals that break if you just look at them!
Have a look on Gumtree for something local to you?
I’ve a Bosch machine I bought second hand 10 year ago. Had to replace the brushes on the motor last year, change out of £20. It’s moved house with me no drama.
Friend had a Beko one with same problem, but parts aren’t available for it.
If you want new check out eBay for scratched / damaged ones? I got a new fridge freezer that way, big scratch down the side, but works perfectly. Big discount, happy days.
