I've got a stupidly big patio with the house I've recently moved in to and I want to make better use of it by building a raised garden with a small wildlife pond it. Going to use sleepers to create something around 15' by 8' and 2' high.
I really don't know what the weight bearing capacity is for a patio and whether I'm asking for trouble particularly as it is a raised patio with about a 4' drop to the garden, this being another reason for building the raised garden on the patio as we can't see the garden because of the drop. Anyone have any experience of doing this?
This thread wasn't as exciting as the click bait title led me to believe it might be....
Two things…
How well built is the retaining wall?
How close to the edge of the retaining wall did you want to build?
Pots and planters may also give you a better look than one solid block of plants. And spread the load.
Also - IME raised ponds aren’t much use as wildlife ponds. Fine for fancy fish, but those frogs and other pond types can’t leap up the side of a 2ft raised pond.
Any mention of patios is going to be ckickbait however you phrase it. 😁
The patio is 20' deep so was going to place it about 6' from the drop.
@the-muffun-man, good point about it not being completely wild life friendly. We are building a proper one on the edge of our wildflower garden. We're hoping that at least we get some damsel and dragon flies in the raised pond.
Build the rest of the garden up to the level of the patio and then you’ll be able to see it?
