I wrote a draft report a week ago, sent it to the recipient passwrod protected, they could open it using the supplied password. I now cannot open the file either from my computer or from the sent attachment using the password as it says invalid. Is there anyway around this as I don't want to have to re write the whole report.
thanks in advance
Can the recipient copy the .doc under a new name and then ensure that it is not password protected before emailing it back to you?
If this works (I think that it should) it still doesn't explain how you ended up in this predicament. Something went wrong.
In the past I have had similar issues. Â Something that has worked a couple of times is to:
- Copy the file, change the file extension to .txt
- Open the now .txt file
- Close the file
- Change file extension back to .docx
- Try opening again
Turn caps lock off / on.
Use the password you actually used rather than the one you think you did.
If the recipient can still open it, ask them to send it back to you unencrypted.
Time was, you could get into passworded Word docs with a broken biscuit. Security is a lot better these days, breaking Office passwords is non-trivial (which is a good thing).

and users thought I was a God for being able to recover their docs and would buy me chocolate.

This - think about common mistakes you may have made like using cap lock or using an O instead of a 0

You can still get round the Excel VBA password in about 3 seconds...
which was Nice.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that.
