Middle child who is currently 15 is going on a foreign trip(France) with the school next year in February. passports need to be handed in by the 3rd of Decmber for processing, whatever that means!
The problem is her current one runs out in June 2016, is it still the case she needs 6 months after the date of travel on her passport?
To further complicate matters her 16th birthday is mid-December, ideally I would like to hold off until then to get her a new passport so it will be a 10 year one as opposed to a 5 year one.
What are my options or is it a case of MTFU and pay out for a 5 year one?

Option 1, call the school, talk to them.

Edit: you don't need six months for France, any time up to expiry is fine.

I vaguely remember you can actually travel to France from the UK on an expired passport. Not sure as I'd want to rely on that as fact, though.

What @midlife says you don't need 6 months for France, that's just countries like the US.

I managed to go to and from Croatia last year with a passport that expired 2 days after my return. Not an issue.
