20.38 today, missed my PB by 4 seconds. Its hard to imagine running it 39 seconds quicker to get sub 20 when all you want to do is vomit and lie down on the wet grass after finishing 😀

I'm going for my 4th pb in a row tomorrow - I suddenly dropped 22 secs off my pb of 19.58, which had stood for over a year, to 19.36, then did 19.30, and last week 19.26! Mad!

Looks really soggy though, so that might be it for pb's...

Do love my parkrun's - Banstead woods is my local.

21.21 I'm getting slower !! My work trip was to Singapore where it was over 30 degrees every day, too hot to run even though I tried so training took a knock. I'm running my first Half Marathon next Sunday so trying to get the some miles in at the moment.

I do the Bristol one, straight up a massive hill and back down again. Not exactly a PB course, but is fun and well organised.

weirdly my PB is on the bristol parkrun, i run much better on hills than on the flat it appears, I'm a good hill climber on the bike too but indifferent on the flat.

Well done Chris, nice feeling to run sub 21 😀

I've broken my leg running a half marathon a couple of weeks ago, 4 more weeks in a cast. Total of 3 months with no exercise and 6 months before 'competetive' exercise 😥

I ran a new PB this Saturday as well. 17m23s. I was knackered and not really up for it, so i started about four rows back and had to overtake all the kamikaze kids and other optimists. Which bodes well for knocking a bit more off when i'm properly rested.

Emsz, well done, pretty impressive time for a girlie 😉 was that a PB ? Any of you do Duathlons ? Is running a second sport to MTBing ?

Thanks RichJJ, the Sheffield Hallam one is pretty quick. It regularly gets won in the low 16s / high 15s. I was 6th.

17.23 would have won ours this week by 2 seconds from a field of 275 runners.

Both good events, great fun and cheap to enter on the night.

This is me! I've got quite into doing offroad duathlons, they're good fun, and as a biker first runner second, tend to be different from most and make up loads of time on the bike. Also recently got into www.triadventure.co.uk races, which add navigation into the mix. PArkrun has really helped the running for these events for me

Chris, get your @rse out there and run next week like you mean it. Call it a bad week and crack on. Volunteer when you are injured as you won't get quicker by not running.

Good luck, I'll be checking your time 😉

Another good one for me - 19.33, not a pb, but I did miss the start and had to work through the whole field!

Volunteer when you are injured as you won't get quicker by not running
- remember there a re plenty of volunteering jobs you can do as well as running, you don't necessarily need to give up a run (at Banstead Woods anyway - I'm sure same applies at others)

I run it Monday and Tuesday .
Then bike rest of the week .
If I run it more than twice a week I am too tired .

Back running this week , 22.04 .

Mountain mayhem next Saturday so no parkrun .

Too late for this year but should be worth parkrun having a run at mountain mayhem , lots of sports people there , fairly easy to get a 3 mile circuit , and great way to recover from Friday night BBQ .

No, the chap in first beat me by ~20s. There are a few properly quick regulars who were absent, so second was a bit of a coup anyway.

Did the inaugural Burnage parkrun yesterday - close to me so nice and convenient and really liked the course. Twisty cross-country style along the Mersey, twice round the perimeter of Burnage rugby club more or less.
Over 100 runners there so I guess they advertised it well. Liked it a lot, worth a look if you're in S Manchester.
Did a PB of 23.09 on it which surprised me as I've done nowt recently - normally do Woodbank which has an unpleasant hill - the Burnage PR is pretty flat which must have made a difference.

I joined ther Greenwich one of these because of this thread, went for the first time on Saturday and ran 26:23. I have not run for a fair while, and on Friday night I was up until 1:30am, drank 7 pints and ate a whole stuffed crust pizza to myself so I reckon I have some room for improvement.

I havent contributed to this thread as I have mixed feelings about parkrun.
On the one hand its great to see such enthusiasm and it appears to motivate a lot of people to get out and run which as an ageing but enthusiastic distance runner is great to see.
On the other hand a lot of club races are going to the wall due to falling numbers and higher costs as well as regulation.
This doesnt apply to Parkrun which means the bodies that are bringing youngsters into the sport and nurturing them through coaching and age graded competitions to bring them to senior level are being squeezed.

If you enjoy Parkrun enter some of the local races laid on by athletic clubs. That way they will survive and they are the ones bringing new blood into the sport and providing coaching.

@ Surfer , I just think that it is too expensive to enter a 10k race .

down here it is £15 , and there is no way I could pay that every week .

but I am sure it encourages some to enter races and join a club .

I think clubs and parkrun can work well together. Takes a bit of willingness on both sides. At Heaton park some of the the Royston Roadrunners (I think) have been very positive.

I run in local races when there is something interesting, but I couldn't do it every week. This might be where the clubs need to go. I'm sure they have races that have run for years, but it seems these days people are looking for 'bigger' challenges.

Marathons, halves or big 10K races I limit to 2-3 per year as the cost can be significant. Manchester 10K anyone, actually costs more than VLM, really poor value in my opinion.

Thats not typical though. I can enter races locally for around £5 as a club runner, £6 unattached.

Have a look on Running diary

but it seems these days people are looking for 'bigger' challenges.

I think breaking 15 mins for 5k is a worthy challenge and far greater than novelty events which seem to be more attractive of late. I would argue these are easier to compete in as the "unusuallness" of them detracts from the competition.
The Manchester 10k is a big city event not a club event as such. There are lots of events around Manchester for the amount of money I mention above.

I do both, and don't see the conflict. There are very few paid for 5ks round here anyway and if I want to race any other distance (which I do!) then I'll do a paid for race. Loads of people have got into running through parkrun and my view is that it increases the pool of people who might do club races in the future. Win win.

I havn't done a Park Run yet but only because I generally work Saturday mornings. The last marathon I entered (actually it was a little over at 27.2 miles) cost £8,50 to enter and for that you had breakfast, there were sandwiches at the checkpoints*, and there was table service chilli at the finish.

You really don't need to hit up the inner city HM's, 10k's and mara's. Most fell races are less than £8 and you'll get tea, coffee, cake, and stuff......and, believe me, some are tough. The Brecon Beacons fell is coming up in a couple of weeks - 19 miles/500ft/£8; can't fault it.

*i was first man home so skipped on these, but you catch my drift.

If you join an athletic club you will also get reductions in entrance fees, also the FRA.

No real way of qualifying that but it would be nice if it where true. There may be just as much chance of a substitution affect which would be ad for clubs.

I agree with what you say. Anyone who knows their running can appreciate what it takes to run sub 15 for 5K. Sadly not everyone will be able to meet that standard, but Joe Average will be able to stumble round "The Beast" and tell everyone about it at work on a Monday.

The first problem is to make people aware of these local races and to me this is where working with parkrun will help. People see races like the Manchester 10K (because frankly you cannot miss it) and assume that all races cost that much. The clubs have to educate them, if you can work with parkrun at the very least you get access to 10000 people a week.

Parkrun concept is mostly great. Running can definitely be cheap though - via the club I get free road runs and cross country through the winter. Summer multi-terrain runs for a quid a go. Via the general calendar, loads of reasonably priced events every week of the year within say an hour, most with a £2 discount. Fell runs typically about £4, and a whole shedload of fun.

I think clubs and park runs can go together well. The members of one of the local clubs also run the local park run, so there's a great cross-over.
Matt's on ball about education though. I've met people at work who have genuinely thought that the London Marathon is the only marathon length race held in the country.
Meanwhile the LDWA will be holding several marathon length events every weekend with food and drink for around 5 quid.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, but sub 15 minutes? I think 16m or 17m is an equally worthy goal for some of us lesser mortals 😉

The course record for the Sheffield Hallam race is 15m23s.

My response was to someone who claimed that people are looking for "more of a challenge" I was making the point that simply striving to run fast is a big enough challenge. "fast" being a relative term and you are right 19, 19 or 25 mins. All worthy goals.

Edit: I never squeezed inside 15 myself BTW. Close but no Cigar!
