Going to a music event at Victoria Park, Hackney, and plan on arriving in London (from the north) and thinking about spending a night or two in my van rather than a hotel.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where would be a good and preferably free berthing point? Looking for a pretty quiet spot where I'm unlikely to get any hassle (Kriss Akabussi laugh) and rest the head, whilst being pretty well positioned for the usual amenities. It's a stealthy van so no one would know there was a puggled body in the back overnight.

I lived and worked across central and east London for a couple of years mid-00s so know the lay of the land pretty well .

Thanks 🙂

Easy to do.
I always just use a quiet residential road. Sliding door facing into road (away from houses), get set up before you head out for the evening, arrive back late and get your head down sharpish. Bottle to piss in and you're good to go.

Up early and out for some brekky, back to the van mid-morning and move it to a similar spot for night 2.

Use a smartphone or similar to make a note of where you're parked. I've spent a worrying hour once or twice wandering drunkenly about looking for the ****er!

Krypton, I understand your fears but hopefully, overall, I'll have a decent time

Thanks Alex. Are residential streets not permitted / metered once you get centralish?

Most are but the time limits vary. There's quire a few around Hackney that only run up to 6pm. Then some start up again at 7am but quite a few are 8.30am. If you want to get up later than 8.30 either pay for an extra hour or so or you'll need to be a bit further out.  https://hackney.gov.uk/parking-zones

Edit: Zone P just north-west of Vic park looks pretty good. Only restricted 10am to 12pm

South east corner of the park, industrial/redeveloped area, but might be a bit too quiet/scruffy in places.

Just off Wick Lane, between Dace road and Roach road.

Top end of Roach road has a footbridge over the canal onto towpath leads to park, there is a cafe next to the bridge ramp.

My first choice is a 24hr supermarket, park relatively close to the store but not outside the entrance, and if you have rooflights, under a street lamp as you can see to get to bed without turning lights on. Checking for any camera controlled parking restrictions of course.

How central do you need to be? Parking restrictions in Arnos Grove are something like 10-11am just to discourage people parking all day in residential streets, so easy enough to circumvent if you can pop back for an hour or so. I've parked and camped in Epping Forest and it was fine, probably the nicest bit of London.

Becareful with super markets some have automatically give tickets via cameras. Just find a couple of residential streets. If you head out to zone 3 you can usually find permit free areas away from the tube.

Check and see if there are any local asda supermarkets. They used to let you stay overnight in their carparks, came from their parent company, walmart who encourage it in the US. Worth asking anyway.

The southern end of the road that runs parallel to the bishops avenue ,err....winnington road ! That often has vans parked there....you’ll be close to the heath , should you want a cuddle in the night.

Abbey Wood Caravan Club Site is 5 mins walk from the station. Pretty sure they take non club members. It’s about 15 mins from Dartford Crossing.

24 hour supermarkets in England are closed at night and on Sundays.   So not really 24 hours.   In Scotland they are open all the time.      This is mainly why we need independence.
