I am presently trying to find a car for my daughter. Live in rural Aberdeenshire. Between £500 & £1000. Checking prices for various models in Parkers Guide and they are quoting figures way below what people are asking. I realise it depends on area and mileage etc, but 2002-4 1.2litre cars such as Clio, Punto, Fiesta the Guide says around £3-500 and prices asked are around £7-900.
Has anyone any experience of the accuracy of the Guide?
they're optimistic at best from recent experience. The car I'm selling has a "market value" somewhere between 3-4k. Parkers guesstimate £1500!!
At the lower end of the market there's almost no point checking with Parkers etc. After all sellers can ask what they like for something, it doesn't mean they'll get it, but if those sorts of cars are being that sold for that sort of money in your area then that's what they're worth.
Aberdeen Tax, Rural area, Cars essential - bet they cost more up that way.
Have a look in Glasgow?
Parker's prices are based purely on fiction. Anything below £2000 is based on local market and condition of the car. There's too much variation on 10-15 year old cars to put a "book" value on it.
I have my dad's '08 Polo to sell. Local dealers reckon £1800-£2k, Parkers much the same. Some people mix up forecourt pricing with private selling.
Some private sellers put cars up at crazy prices.
I have seen independent dealers selling similar spec cars lower than asking prices by private sellers. Utter nonsense.
You are forgetting the Scotland tax on the car!!
Every car Ive looked at in Scotland has been well overprice compared to similiar in England.
Go on how popular the car is not guide prices. I bought a Jimny from a Suzuki dealer and sold it privately for the same money.
Lots of dealers will tell you px guide prices are phish yet funnily stick to the same guide prices for dealer resale prices. I.e they twist to get money out of people partly dishonestly IMO.
My brother in law bought a new (s/h) car in Devon when he was home for xmas and drove it back up to Aberdeen as he said the prices were bonkers.
With the oil prices/job losses(?) in the Aberdeen oil trade has it had an affect on the local car prices at all?!
In my experience the franchised dealer price is what you would generally expect to pay for a decent one privately.

Funny this, i flew from Dorset to Stirling to by a car as it was about 2k cheaper than I could get one in England.

Definitely a lot of this going on. Some the prices on eBay are insane. And I'd say most of them are over the odds. But it seems to have gotten to the stage where people have just started to accept that's the price now...

Some truth in this too. Finding a small car under 1k is a bit of a minefield in my experience. People buying around that budget are usually looking for economy, and the small car is king. But small cars are not often owned by motoring enthusiasts... A lot of the cheap ones will have suffered serious neglect, and the good ones command a high price. Your best going out and having a look at them, rather than looking at any book prices.
Where are you looking and where are you in rural aberdeen.
Man on the ground in rural aberdeen and prices are really not that bad once you get past the dreamers.
Also , i find the quality of cheap car on offer is better down dundee way.
Oh and hora - work colleague was out replacing his car at the weekend , said he has never seen aberdeen audi and town and country as busy , so it appears not.
Aye trying to hand their cars back 😉
Chopping them in for the latest model on their mobile phone esque pcp deals before thye have no job and cant get them selves a new car........
Welcome to aberdeen logic.
Never met so many stupid smart people.
Best looking at we buy any car, they can't ignore those prices, as it's what someone will actually pay.

Offered me less than £300 for my Civic. Aye, okay then.
Go on what price cars are selling for would be my nugget of advice 🙂
Honestly just go on Autotrader / eBay and start there.
Wbac are a joke
I have always been able to sell for more (some times lots more) than wbac have offered based on the market for equivalent cars at thw time.
On a 5-700 quid car wbac will offer 2-300 quid.
That kind of lowballing just leads me to think you dont have money and im not inclined to even try and strike a deal.
Sold my Mondeo Estate for about £2k above the book price (older one so it was in the book at about £5k) and it was advertised higher. The buyer pointed that out on the phone and I agreed but pointed out the prices they are selling for, and the fact there weren't any 130 TDCI estates within 90 minutes drive, brief haggle on the phone at which point I said that the best price and no more movement.
He came to view, tried it on a bit more and I reminded him that it was the lowest I'd go, suddenly the cash was out the back pocket and off it went!
The book really is a rough guide and only useful as an excuse for dealers to pay as little as possible when you part exchange something that will end up at auction.
I have always found Parkers to be pretty accurate to be honest. Anyone selling a car will expect a buyer to haggle so will price it accordingly, unless they want a quick sale.
