I'd leave my car parked near my house, get the train in and use tube / bus / foot to get around.

Surbiton, Woking, Guildford are all fairly civilised places with decent train connections into Wimbledon and the city at various distances from the South West direction.
Depends which direction you're driving from really

Nowhere near Wimbledon, I park at Blackheath for free, walk through Greenwich park to the DLR at Cutty Sark.

I should have added I'm coming in from the North probably down the A1 , just somewhere either a bus ride in for the last few miles to the centre of the city and I can then catch the tube to Southfields station

As above, where are you travelling from? I live on the Surrey/London boarder and a train from my local station is 11 minutes to Wimbledon. There is free parking with 5 minutes walk for the station too.

Also, having re-read the OP, are you looking for somewhere easy to get to Wimbledon or the City?

Don’t drive into London if you can avoid. Must be a P&R somewhere on your way in?

Where are you coming from?

Wimbledon is almost all controlled parking zones as is a lot of the neighbouring bits (Morden, Raynes Park, Southfields etc)and whilst there’s public car parks they’re not really geared for multi day parking.
Wimbledon is very well served with public transport, overground, tram and district line bang in the town centre and northern line at South Wimbledon.

Traffic has been fairly shite round the town centre and the approaches from north to south recently, it’s not great fun driving around at present. Depending on where you’re staying public transport is by far the easiest option to get to sw19.

Justpark or if staying with a friend they can apply for a visitors pass from the council. There are a few streets with free parking on Sunday too, you can find on parkopedia. One off the main high street next to idimsum from recollection. They do quite a nice Xiao long bao too.

FWIW JustPark have Asda 24hr carpark in Hayes+Harlington for 5.50 per day. 6mins walk to Elizabeth Line. Last stop before the line splits between Reading and Heathrow, so very regular service into town (ex if strikes or power outage).

Avoids the final drive further in where the traffic gets much worse.

If that happened to be 2 weekend days, then there are plenty of streets round that way that only have patrols Monday-Friday.

Wimbledon is pretty easy to reach without going through much "city traffic" if you come round the M25 then in on the A3. Probably not much quicker than parking in North London and switching to tube/train, but definitely less hassle - especially with luggage. I'd drive all the way if you can find some local parking.

Drive down the A1 / M25 and A40. Park in Westfield shopping centre. £8 a day. Secure. Not in congestion zone charging and 200m off A40.

The Shepards Bush to Clapham junction to Westfields. 25-30mins depending on connection. Also get some shopping at Westfield if that’s your thing. I use it if I occasionally drive to work.

Check traffic at the time you're driving, if you get stuck in the M25/A3 roadworks you'll wish you'd done something different. Crawled there over broken glass, possibly.

As above, load of free residential parking around Esher / Ember Lane 5 mins walk from the station or same in Hinchley Wood. Short hop to Wimbledon and then tube to Southfields

Don’t forget the ULEZ if you’re parking in some of these places. Could make for an expensive trip otherwise!

That’ll be past the usual Lhr terrible traffic and then the m25 / a3 junction that is completely fubar’ed with construction then ;).

I'm looking to avoid major hold ups, roadworks etc so maybe 10/20 miles from the centre of London bus or train in and then once the banks robbed and we have our swag a quick getaway back up to Scotch corner

Not quite what you asked, but if you're coming from the West, the Oxford Tube stops at Thornhill p&r (on the east side of Oxford) and takes about 1hr to get into central London.

I’ve started parking there if we go to London for the day or a weekend (from Sheffield). Always spaces at the weekend, reasonably priced and the tube gets you right in to the centre (or easy connections anywhere else for that matter). It’s five minutes off the M1 too.
