These 'staunch defenders' of the free press are attending today's solidarity rally in Paris

Interesting reading. (JHJ to the forum...)

For once something positive happens in the world and a moderator starts a thread to slag it off.

I have been programmed to exhale a deep breath every time you post a picture, shake my head when you post a video and laugh out loud when you espouse your "whacky" theories.

Handful- you have ****ing big hands then ?

What exact number is a handful? I am going for hundreds if not thousands owning major media outlets.

Still you are ray of sunshine and positivity compared to edukator. I give you that.

Edukator - Troll
For once something positive happens in the world and a moderator starts a thread to slag it off.
🙄
It's the appalling hypocrisy of some who purport to support this that Cougar is pointing out, not the other million or so who really mean what they say.

Hard to get exact numbers, but 6 is a reasonable ballpark figure...

Today was a disaster for the extremists on all sides.

Still you are ray of sunshine and positivity compared to edukator. I give you that.

What are you chasing me around for, Junkyard? You accused me of being a racist on the other Charlie thread but declined to quote anything I'd said to back up the claim, and you've made another pathetic and gratuitous insult here. A vendetta?

The people came out in solidarity, nobody invited the politicians all out for a media scrum.

Us the people voted some of them in, (well i didnt vote cameroon in), and we must ensure we dont vote them in again should be the cry of the people revolting.

I watched the rally - and impressive show of solidarity and yes a bad day for extremism.

And yet (as always) I am drawn to the contradictions

Yes, cougar (as in other issues) obvious contradiction (hypocrisy?) between those who attended and their track record and the spirit of the rally. But as you noted before, what is the alternative?

Having a determinism v free will revision debate with younger son - how many were there from free will? The children - bought along by their parents and told to hold banners they did not understand, perhaps? When parents take their kids to church etc it's brainwashing. How/to what extent is this different? How much free will did the perpetrators have? How responsible were they?

Following on - the lovely sound of children's voices celebrating freedom, tolerance and understanding with the (a nationalistic?) anthem during which they proclaim at the top of their voices -

"To arms citizens, Form your battalions
March, march
Let impure blood
Water our furrows"

Lovely sentiments!!!

Contradiction aside a powerful response. Perhaps the same thing in Nigeria and Lebanon this week where similar losses have been on an even bigger scale?

The only person I voted for was in the crowd with the rest of the people:

François Bayrou, président du Modem, s'exprime au micro de BFMTV : "J’avais envie d’être avec des Français qui défilent et ne pas être dans quelque chose d’officiel (…) C’est une manière plus émouvante et moins officiel. Je suis très heureux de la foule présente et du sentiment qui s’exprime de ces gens de toutes religions, de toutes origines (...) C’était très important qu’on soit tous là pour dire ensemble qu’on refuse"

La "récupération politique" is frowned upon here and sensible politicians avoid doing things that leave them open to being accused of it. So far so good with the exceptions of Holland who didn't invite Marine and Marine who told everyone.

Makes you wonder how that will get reported elsewhere in the world

Surely ploughing weapons into situations like that can't help?

Odd that Ri****d is Chair of Intelligence+Security Committee~ Conflict of interest?

JHJ - I meant the opposite, let all the leaders arrive in Abuja and Beiruit to show respect of the terrible loss of life there this week.

Food for thought:

That's actually a pretty good link.

For once something positive happens in the world and a moderator starts a thread to slag it off.

Point the first, I'm not slagging anything off, I just thought it was an interesting commentary and thought I'd share. An action which the majority of replies seem to have appreciated. Ho hum.

Point the second, I'm posting as a user, not a moderator, and that's a particularly lazy dig even for you. What possible relevance does that have?

We're now taking national anthems literally? 😀

As for taking kids out to march in solidarity against those who would react with such violence against printed material being compared to taking kids to a church to teach them [EDIT]articles of faith for which there is no proof[EDIT] (edit for the benefit of not insulting the religionists)... 😆

How/to what extent is this different?

An extraordinarily silly question.

Among les crayons and stylos been worn or held as a sign of protest that the freedom/liberte (to write and draw) is sacrosanct, where there any badges or representations of burkas?

that's a particularly lazy dig

Don't worry cougs, when they (not E'kor mind) happen every thread you soon get used to it. Oh look. 😉 part of the entertainment factor.

Glad the rally passed off safely and with dignity. Bravo!

Well in all honesty, Cougar, I expected a thread full of enthusiasm for a nation of people getting out on the street to express support for the republican values of liberté, fraternité and égalité, the freedom of the press, enlightenment, humanism, and that it had brought together so many people who are often in conflict with each other.

I asked junior to improvise something:

Feel free to post that link too.

He appears to want to keep it secret.

So that's settled then. In France, it's O.K. to take the piss out of religion without some idiot blowing your head off now?

'Were there any badges or representations of burkhas'?
I imagine there were but only if their husbands/masters gave them permission to attend.

This year some of the stand out moments of humanity for me have been the "I'll walk/ride with you" sentiment that helped defuse a lot of tension in Australia following the hostage taking due to the silent majority taking part and the "Je Suis Charlie" message that has spread across Europe. The silent majority who are not extremists or radical are speaking.

In these cases it is not the dignitaries that matter but the presence of the silent majority.

Yes, Yunki, the young man in that vid and playing the guitar above are one and the same so it was a few years ago.

Sorry for bringing the moderator thing in to it, Cougar, and thanks for pointing our the vid was private.

Quote of the day for me was - a young English girl being interviewed in the Place de la Republique was asked why she was there and she said: "I'm only 17. This is the sort of thing I just read about in history books"
