Buying ny 11 year old daughter a smartphone (against my better judgement) as she will be walking home from school on her own after christmas and also because all her friends have phones and she is being left out of stuff.

I'm getting her an android samsung PAYG - what apps / settings are the best for tracking her and ensuring she doesn't use the phone in bed late at night etc etc - any tips on managing a young child with a phone?

Cheers

Rob

Take it off her at night. Or trust her not to use it at night, and take it away if she breaks your trust?

I don't have kids so am possibly not best placed but on my recent work experience I would suggest no messaging apps like wickr, kik, etc, make sure you have all her passwords and check the phone regularly. There may be some useful stuff here;

Only give her wifi when she askes to do something specific on the internet and obviously take it off her to charge downstairs during the night.

Oh yeah,

Modern Android lets you set up a restricted user account I think. Do that.

Ask them not do it and if they break the take it off them, works here.

Drac that only works if you know what to ask them not to do.

The importance of making sure they understand that any picture they take and send is forevermore out of their control, despite what they think they know to the contrary, cannot be overstated. (And yes, plenty of girls that young have, unfortunately).

Make sure you've put a credit limit on, contract and no more, ie £0.

Otherwise it's your fault, not hers if so goes over.

We never put 'controls' on our 3 sons phones, not been a problem.
